Lautaro (Anglicized as 'Levtaru') (Mapudungun: Lef-Traru "swift hawk") (Spanish pronunciation: [lawˈtaɾo]; c. 1534 – April 29, 1557) was a young Mapuche toqui known for leading the indigenous resistance against Spanish conquest in Chile and developing the tactics that would continue to be employed by the Mapuche during the long-running Arauco War.

In 1546 Lautaro, son of the local chieftain named Curiñancu, was captured by Pedro de Valdivia's army in the vicinity of Concepción. He remained a prisoner of the Spaniards for six years, during which time he became Valdivia's personal companion.

Among his regular tasks was to take care of Valdivia's horses and he always had to accompany him to battles and military exercises. Thus he learned not to fear the horse, he learned to ride until he became a good horseman. In addition, he observed the battle dispositions of the Spaniards, learning from Valdivia his military tactics.

During this period, he made a certain degree of friendship with one of Valdivia's captains, Marcos Veas, who taught him the use of some weapons and cavalry tactics. This practice was common, as Lautaro had to serve as an auxiliary Indian in battles.

In 1550, during the battle of Andalién (February 22) and the battle of Penco (March 12), Lautaro witnessed the chastisements to which Valdivia made the defeated Mapuches submit, mutilating the prisoners and freeing them afterwards, as an example to avoid future rebellions; this had a deep impact on him. It is probable that as a result of these violent acts against his people, a terrible disillusionment and rebellion was engendered within him with respect to Valdivia and the Spaniards.

He escaped sometime in 1552 on horseback and also with the bugle of Pero Godinez, Valdivia's field master, returning to his people. The escape of Valdivia's page did not pass beyond the Spaniards as an almost habitual fact and they did not pursue him.

Lautaro resolutely demonstrated his natural gifts as an innate leader, he taught his people to lose their fear of horses, they learned to ride and to appreciate the horse as a combat weapon. He called meetings in the open field and taught them the military arts and the use of new weapons. He also designed a series of military tactics: the use of squads, the choice of terrain, ambush and guerrilla tactics. In this way, having the authority of the caciques, he led a great military uprising against the Spaniards, who up to that moment were victorious throughout the area between the Mapocho River and the Biobío.

Lautaro knew that his recently trained forces under his command were now in a line called "Interior Line", that is to say, between two forces, those of the Purén fort to the south and those of Concepción to the north. He chooses to neutralize one of them. He deceives Gómez de Almagro in the Purén fort and makes sure that his troops do not join Valdivia's in the Tucapel fort. Lautaro captures an emissary and learns that Valdivia is marching south and must necessarily pass through Tucapel. In effect, Valdivia in mid-December 1553 leaves Concepción and goes to Quilacoya, where he takes some soldiers on his march to Arauco, the Mapuche spies follow the column from the heights of the hills and do not present him with a battle, leaving him to make his way. Valdivia is surprised that he does not receive any news from the fort of Tucapel and that he is not harassed on the way; but he continues, his company is devastated, taken prisoner, tortured and executed.

Then he systematically razed the Spanish cities. Twice he sacked and burned Concepción, center of the Spanish settlements in the south of Chile.

For two years there was no more news of Spaniards in the region, while the situation of the Mapuche people as a result of the war and the drought had caused a great famine that ravaged the Mapuches, the crops had failed due to a season of severe drought and acts of cannibalism appeared, In addition, typhus settled among them, diminishing Lautaro's warrior strength.

Lautaro, in spite of the famine and typhus managed to lead more than 2,000 warriors and with these he crossed the Biobío for the first time and continued northward and began to recruit people among the Picunches, much more peaceful than the Mapuches.

In Santiago, Diego Cano and only 14 men were urgently sent to Santiago to find out the real situation of the Maule. In Santiago, panic spread and defenses began to be built in the city while there was still a dispute over the royal succession of Valdivia.

There is an episode within this period that narrates an interview arranged at a distance, between two hills, that occurred between Lautaro and one of Villagra's captains, Marcos Veas, an old friend of Lautaro in Valdivia's times, in which this Spanish soldier urges Lautaro to lay down his arms since he could not oppose the Spanish power forever. Lautaro responded rudely to Veas by setting the Maule as a border for the Spaniards and also asking them for a tribute in horses, women and weapons in exchange for not attacking the colony. Lautaro's offer was rejected outright by Veas and the interview and friendship ended.

Lautaro advanced towards the Maule River and once crossed, he learned that Francisco de Villagra, successor of Pedro de Valdivia, had left Santiago with a punitive battalion of 50 horsemen and 30 arquebusiers plus a thousand yanaconas. Lautaro, judging that the capital was unguarded, advanced to the north, letting Francisco de Villagra pass to the south.

In 1555, the Real Audiencia of Lima ordered Villagra to reconstruct Concepción, which was done under the command of Captain Alvarado. Upon learning of this, Lautaro successfully besieged Concepción with 4,000 warriors. Only 38 Spaniards managed to escape by sea the second destruction of the city.

After the second rout at Concepción, Lautaro desired to attack Santiago. He found scant support for this plan from his troops, who soon dwindled to only 600, but he carried on. In October 1556 his northward march reached the Mataquito River, where he established a fortified camp at Peteroa. In the Battle of Peteroa he repulsed attacking Spanish forces under the command of Diego Cano, and later held off the larger force commanded by Pedro de Villagra. Being advised that still more Spaniards were approaching, Lautaro decided to retreat towards the Maule River losing 200 warriors. With the Spaniards in hot pursuit he was forced to retire beyond the Itata River. From there he launched another campaign towards Santiago when Villagra's army passed him by on the way to save the remaining Spanish settlements in Araucanía. Lautaro had chosen to give Villagra's force the slip and head for the city to attack it.

Despite the Mapuches' stealth, the city's leaders learned of the advance and sent a small expedition to thwart it, buying time for word to be sent to Villagra to return to the city from the south. The Spanish forces met in the field, and from a member of the local ethnos, the Picunche, they learned the disposition of Lautaro's camp. At dawn, on April 29, 1557, the conquistadors launched a surprise attack from the hills of Caune, obtaining a decisive victory in the Battle of Mataquito in which Lautaro was killed early in the fighting. After the defeat of his army, his head was cut off and displayed in the plaza of Santiago.

It was April 29, 1557 (some sources mention April 30, or May 1), every April 29 is commemorated the "Day of the Heroes and Martyrs of the Mapuche Nation".

With the end of Lautaro, a remarkable figure of the Arauco war disappears, no one else came to match his conditions as a leader or his military genius, which was at the height of the great strategists of his time.

I really wish there was more community stuff where I'm at. just like, I really hate feeling isolated and alone, and it's depressing. like at least when I was in college or when I had work, there were people and stuff and I dunno, I just like, hate how atomized everything is. where like I get more community from like here, than like in real life. and like I do try to look at any local events and stuff happening, but it's either like boring stuff or things im really not interested in. like who fucking cares about bar nights? I hate alcohol because of like what I see it's doing to my dad all my life, or like my mom. but its just all bars bars and bars. and just ugh.

just like nothing to do, and nothing to do with anyone

I saw the new Badempanada video, and figured I would check out the channel of the guy he was responding to. The sheer ignorance is shocking. This guy has one video about praxis, and in it he makes such claims as "the praxis of modern feminism is state taxation" and claims that socialists very rarely talk about praxis. A wild claim, considering leftists spaces are one of the few were that word is common. He also does an island hypothetical, which while not wrong in and of itself, is a bit indicative of his beliefs.

In the replies to that video, there is one Canadian complaining about Hakim. His whole argument is that computers can't simulate economics because his "introductory economics course" told him all economic models are wrong, making a computer model to do so would be really complicated, and he's never met a communist who has tried to do such a thing. The problem with that being firstly, of course, in our capitalist society such economic modeling and decision making is already being done. One only needs to look at high frequency trading, much less "The People's Republic of Walmart", to see this. Secondly, lots of communists are interested in cybernetics, including a few I know personally.

Normies hold racism to such a sacred cow status its unreal.

For anyone in a masochistic mood, here's an article about those steven universe psas where we get some chud getting pissed and defending racism.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist

We teach children two contradictory lessons about the truth. The first is not to lie. The second is that you sometimes need to lie to avoid hurt feelings. The newest anti-racism PSA put out by Cartoon Network cleverly exploits both lessons. In the ad, Pearl from ‘Steven Universe’ informs students that there are problems with the way schools are teaching them history:

Ok, I will quote you on that

She tells the story of Lewis Latimer, Black inventor of the filament inside lightbulbs, who receives scant if any mention in the textbooks in favor of white science savior Thomas Alva Edison. That’s a “One To Grow On” moment that anyone but the most fervent bigot can get behind.

Ok, so far so good...

But that’s not what this PSA is really about. Pearl moves onto the meat of her argument:

Uh oh

The makers of the Cartoon Network PSA would have us believe that historians wrote their history as a purely emotional, self-interested narrative chronicle of white achievements intended to marginalize non-white people. But here, as is so often the case when discussing social justice matters, we begin with an accusation that reason cannot rebut.

Well yeah, they did.

Pearl immediately renders all history teachers, textbooks and curriculum as suspect–possible collaborators in a conspiracy to marginalize so-called “people of color.”

As you CHUDs like to say, looks like we struck a nerve. The truth hurts doesn't it? But it gets worse from here.

With this public service announcement, Cartoon Network is encouraging children to distrust their parents, teachers, historical curriculum and any version of history that frames Western Civilization in even a marginally positive light. And we are encouraging them to believe there is no harm in this. But anyone with an actual “lived experience” of history cannot be alone in feeling unsettled by the implications.

As you claim in the start of your article. Sometimes we need to lie in order to avoid hurting feelings. Only you think that, and only you think it should be done for YOUR sake. I can speak from experience as a teacher, public schools are full of propaganda and teaching critical thinking is good.

Critical Race Theory is a totalizing ideology: you are either with it or against it. There is no middle ground. And this public service announcement is an unapologetic hymn to CRT aimed squarely at our children.

You're not doing a good job presenting the other side as an alternative. Look at how you're handling the suggestion for nuance or critical thinking. Literally half this article is a cracker screeching "MEIN GOTT! ZE UNTERSMENSCH KNOW! ZUT IT DOWN!"

Targeting the young is common practice among totalizing ideologies seeking to transform civilizations. Their societies taught both Hitler Youth and communist Young Pioneers to be vigilant for lapses in ideological purity on the part of their parents and teachers and to report infractions. There’s an eerie resemblance to that appeal in the Cartoon Network’s PSA. What they’re teaching you, Pearl argues, is wrong because the adults teaching it are ignorant and self-interested.

And there it is. "Silly SJWs. There's no such thing as racism (even though it's good, actually). But also, anyone who disagrees with me is a dirty commie."Dude, cold war's over, you won. For the side that's been getting nothing but Ws for the past 40 years, you seem quite unhappy. And the nazis? Dude, your side self-identifies with the nazis. What is it with villains and trying to say the heroes are the same as them? And before you say you're not a nazi, if you're going to give my side the least charitable view. I will to your's. You're not special.

By the circular logic of critical race theory, disagreement with its assertions is proof of complicity in racism. This is the new Red Scare of our age. Much as people rushed to denounce friends, neighbors and co-workers as Communist to the McCarthy hearings, modern Twitter mobs zero in on dissidents who take issue with the tenets of the true faith and “call out” their heresy, resulting in ruined reputations and loss of income and employment. Only you, young pioneers, know and have sufficient courage to embrace the truth. The future is ours, comrade.

You just implied that questioning what the US government tells you makes you a communist. Again, how are you any better? Look at how you're handling someone disagreeing with your worldview. All this does is make the right look like emotional hypocrites that can't handle the truth, so they rely on name-calling online or violence at worst to get where they want. You're literally screeching blasphemy right now, calm the fuck down.

The truth hurts, doesn't it cracker?

Dude took off from work a half hour early saying "sorry to do this again but if I don't leave right now I'll die.". It was a dead night and the work was done and it was just a half hour to close, so no problem at all, but that's quite an exit statement. He may have meant of boredom or he has sensory issues that trigger anxiety so maybe that's it, but without any elaboration it also felt like it might be a very crucial half hour? I'm kinda concerned for the guy life has been giving him a real haymaker and he's just that little bit not tough enough for the situations he's been in. Like I found out he was roommates with this off and on homeless gutter punk dude who is an absolute piece of shit and a violent drunk crackhead. He'd be a handful for me and I've lived that life, this dude is a 24 year old smol autistic gamer who just doesn't want people smoking around his asthmatic cat. My life advice is basically that of Coach McGuirk so I'm useless to help.

The company i work for has nearly 2000 employees. The CEO is unhappy with technical decisions that have been made, so is going to spend 3 hours next week with the team doing some “white board architecting” to fix the issues.

This is a man with 2 years of experience as an engineer before becoming a CEO. The man’s Dunning-Kruger lifestyle knows no bounds, he’s actively gonna fuck the company up even more and cause more job losses because he wants to larp as an “engineer” lmao agony-shivering

He also uses the word “hashtag” in conversation like it’s a normal thing to do, “let’s turn up the hashtag energy on the work”

Banned from /r/comics for this. Never let anyone tell you the liberals don't know they're fucking up, they're constantly aware that they're sleep walking into destruction and they're furious that you'd point it out

I'm going to lose my mind when Biden loses and everyone blames the voters rather than the party that ran an obviously unpopular candidate. If the democratic party actually thought this was an important election they couldn't lose they'd be running someone else

Another reason I miss my friend so much—now that they’re gone I have nobody to fucking talk to. I just have these cis dude tweakers to talk to. I mean my friend is also kind of a tweaker but these people—they only talk about the most stupid baby-brained shit when they’re high, and the rest of the time they’re just annoying.

I just want my fucking friend back. It’s not even only having tweakers to talk to—I just loved talking to them, hanging out with them. I can’t think of anyone else who ever made me feel the same way.

And they’re gone. And there’s nothing I can do. I have to “move on.” Fuck this. No matter what I say, no matter how I explain myself, no matter who explains myself, no matter how much I mature, they will be just a memory.

And no matter how real the pain feels, nobody will tell me that it’s real. It’s all in my head.

I would trade the rest of my life, just to see them one last time. It’s a stupid saccharine cliche but I mean it, because this fucking sucks.

Ross Scott of Accursed Farms (Freeman's Mind) is planning to sue Ubisoft over its games as a service model. It looks like they're going to make The Crew literally unplayable after March. Which means that people literally won't be able to play the game they bought, even though it should be able to be played in single-player mode, because Ubisoft has decided to kill the servers.

What's more, it seems that this sort of thing is 100% legal in the USA. That's why he's trying to get in touch with people who do this in the EU, Australia, Canada and Brazil, where consumer laws are much stricter.
