The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons are both great.

Some that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

  • Final Fantasy Adventure (first Mana game)
  • Castlevania II
  • Mario's Picross (if you're into picross)
  • Kirby's Dream Land 2
  • Super Mario Land 2
  • Mole Mania (if you like sokobans)

Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge goes so hard waow-based

[–] nemmybun@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes! It's really incredible what they could accomplish on the GB. I wish the other two games were better.

yea Legends moment

Catrap is a funny little puzzle game. Heiankyo Alien is a port of a really classic maze game.

Surprised to see nobody recommend Mega Man V, which unlike its predecessors is a bespoke entry, very cool.

Donkey Kong 94 - great puzzle platformer

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru - Japan-only, but has an English patch. A lot of stuff from Link's Awakening was prototyped in this game

Kaeru no Tame

FrogPog

Damn if this were released in English it would have been my whole identity as a kid

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

There's an English patch so now it can be your whole identity as an adult!

It's really good, though. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Zelda games. Prince Richard from Link's Awakening is originally from this game.

It's on the Japanese Switch Virtual Console (in Japanese though), too!

final fantasy legend series, old school saga frontier games

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Noted. Haven't tried these yet.

Also check out battle for Olympus, it's like Zelda. Also Sword of Hope 1 and 2.

Wario Land, especially 2 and 3. 1 is good too, just very different from later entries.

[–] dannoffs@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wario Land 3 is hands down the best GBC game.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Whoops, forgot that was a gbc game

Oh well, play it anyway it's fantastic

[–] dannoffs@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Sameboy does GBC too so it's all good

How come they developed for iOS and not Android? I get why you wouldn't port it on mobile at all so you don't have to deal with a touchscreen but I don't see why an open source project would go for the walled garden and neglect the more flexible and cheaper alternative

If you like retro Legend of Zelda, try Crystalis

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

Tetris blast

[–] AndJusticeForAll@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The two Pokemon TCG games on GBC are really fun.
