am i just paranoid or will this make it harder to get evidence of abuse etc. while being presented as a wholesome anti-phone-surveillance thing?

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Fuck. There's layers to this that I, again, didn't think of before I read these comments. Yeah, forbidding any scrutiny could also be bad.

Before knee-jerk "let people enjoy things" chants, I want to stress that not all fun that partygoes seek at parties is necessarily mutually consenting, or even directed toward conscious people.

Not debate bro'ing but Brock Turner was video taped wasn't he? The rampant toxic misogynistic culture doesn't really seem to care about being filmed and law enforcement and the judicial system don't either.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd rather there be some way of at least presenting wrongdoing whether or not it's actually punished after it happens.

Saying "it wasn't punished therefore stop trying" is a head-first dive into the is/ought realm of bad ideas.

[–] MattsAlt@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm not saying to stop trying, moreso that the effort needs to be directed at a more productive area like security in these venues. My city scene has plenty of stories of security not caring at all when women complain about bad actors before things have escalated further

The sea of phones at concerts sucks, not to mention people filming and making fun of strangers having a good, weird time. Again, this isn't saying these issues are more important than assaults, but that phone control policies only seem to impact one end of the spectrum.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

That's what I'm assuming as well

[–] anindefinitearticle@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's why instead of stickers, we should have lens caps with an easy toggle mechanism.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There's an argument to be made about a lens that is visibly disabled. Good faith and creepers aren't known to overlap

[–] anindefinitearticle@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A lens cap visibly disables a lens, while allowing it to be taken off quickly and cleanly in an emergency (e.g. a cop enters).

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

i agree, but it's also able to be removed quickly for some creeper shit.

I'm kind of leaning towards the slightly icky position of "people in this club know that photo evidence is not likely to exist"

There are probably still security cameras. You just need to be really good about using them.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago

Germans do be some real freaks.

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago (2 children)

But what if you peel them off?

[–] Chronicon@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

I assume you get kicked out, similar to someone drinking that doesnt have the right stamp or wristband or whatever in clubs that allow 18+ who cant drink

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think they change color once peeled off and they check when you leave. I know that factories make people use these pretty frequently.

[–] ikilledtheradiostar@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

check when you leave

And then what? They swipe your phone?

I'm not sure. They might ask you to go through your photos and ask to delete them, or just ban you.

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why not use the locked phone bags that Jack White forces people to use?

[–] driving_crooner 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I get it jn swingers clubs, but in regular clubs that just idiotic. Lost your friends? Get lost all night. Can't check uber prices or the line up time table, or the fucking clock.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nobody has clocks on their walls anymore sadness

Ibiza parties must be the nomiest EDM scene in the world.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fucking clownish that the world is so dominated by creepy techbros that it's a given that anyone's camera on anyone's phone takes pictures/video without the user's permission or awareness.

In a somewhat less fucked up world that shit would be a criminal act that would shut down the manufacturers.

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's less about cameras recording clandestinely and more about people just being snitches and taping completely on purpose

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Oh, right. I forgot some people are voluntarily creeps with their cameras because it rarely crosses my mind.

It seems it doesn't require prototype "Google Glass" treats for glassholes to be glassholes.

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Shame that Google Glass died because I'd like to have this for recording my dog, that way I'd be able to toss him a stick/a ball and just record him by looking at him and not having to awkwardly hold my phone in my off hand.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That'd be great if that was the only use that buyers had for it. It was being used for creep camera antics and general assholery in public, causing many such assholes to get thrown out of public venues and even beat up for being assholes, thus why the product didn't go into full production.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The augmented reality was also causing hallucinations for people who used them for long periods of time throughout the day. When they took the glasses off, they'd see menus or pop-ups that weren't there. This doesn't even get into all the eye strain and damage done to people's vision.

I think that's part of why VR hype waves have crested and receded, no matter what "Oculus Rift" and the MAGA sex pest creep with the fetish for exploding headwear tried to push with it.

As James Stephanie Sterling put it once, Oculus Rift was "privilege goggles" that expected not just a significant cost to buy the damn thing, but sufficient floor space to use it and a rather ableistic presumption on the part of the manufacturers for who could actually use the thing for long.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I never understood why they make shit you have to wear on your face when like 70% of the population wears glasses already.

Something I didn't find out until I was in physical therapy is how we rely on our sight for balance. One of the things they have you do when learning how to walk and stand again is closing your eyes and trying to balance on one foot. I've never been less interested in VR because of that.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I understand that completely and have had similar experiences that taught me that, too.

The "VR will be everywhere and you better get in on the ground floor or you're a Luddite" euphoria posting was everywhere, sort of like the treat printer hype now, with a similar misanthropic disregard for naysayers or even for people that aren't in a position to benefit from the bazinga tech, or are even negatively affected by it.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Who knew it would end up being a fad like the last two times it was tried?

[–] chickentendrils@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

they better check within the camera app after, I've got some with rear or front cameras relocated to the side/mic hole/3mm jack

[–] NeelixBiederman@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

Wonder if they remember to put it on front facing?

[–] driving_crooner 6 points 1 month ago

As someone who goes to clubs pretty regularly, I think this is pretty stupid tbh. If people want to record videos of the DJ instead of dancing, good for them.
