To be honest - I don't remember his 2020 delegate and popular vote numbers at all. But I'll bloviate for a while anyway. I don't think he'd ever have a chance to be president other than sneaking in the backdoor by being the veepee and getting lucky somehow. I think his elite appeal doesn't translate to average Americans. The public probably see him as friendly but also a technocrat dork who doesn't know how to eat a barbequed rib. And I assume if he somehow got the nomination - he'd run a hilariously bad campaign in the general. He's expend enormous amounts of time and energy trying to get "left-leaning" GOP to vote for him.

The GOP is openly fash - of course - and his plan would be a big loser. Many GOP will never vote for a gay person. But I don't think he'd accept that. He'd assume he had Obama 2.0 magic and he has enough moderate right-wing cred to get votes.
