The original flag already had a red star and a bear! They could have just wrote the word socialist between California and Republic. But that would require them to know that the USSR was composed of Socialist Republics or that bears are an emblem of Russia or just any history in general really.

California has one of the best state flags IMO. I wish we could keep the bear and the hammer and sickle somehow.
