That's right folks the year is drawing to a close so it's time to nominate and vote for your 2023 Hexies! These are the Hexbears you think exemplify what it means to be a real Hexbear. Here's how it works:

  1. Pick from the below categories

  2. Nominate someone for that category by tagging them

  3. If you are nominated respond to the nomination to accept it

  4. Most upbeared accepted nomination in each category wins!

What do you win? The esteem of your fellow Hexbearian comrades of course. What more could you want?

The categories for this year's 2023 Hexie awards are:

  1. Most Influential Hexbear of 2023

  2. Most likely to be called a tankie offline

  3. Best in Community Engagement

This year we have a special bonus category to commemorate the year we federated;

  1. Best non local user

Alright comrades that's it from me, be sure and do your democratic duty and vote for your 2023 Hexie winners and congrats in advance to the winners of this highly coveted and prestigious award!

1 - Most influential hexbear

@UlyssesT@hexbear.net for personally killing Kissinger in his first day of logging off. At this pace we'll have full communism by February

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 37 points 8 months ago

Shame he isnt here to accept this because in my mind this is the clear winner

1. Most Influential Hexbear - @SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net

An essential facet of Hexbear culture. This is a different, better place with him.

2. Most Likely to be Called a Tankie Offline - @wombat@hexbear.net

It is the end of 2023 and Stalin saved the world from fascism.

3. Best in Community Engagement - @WhyEssEff@hexbear.net

1 @SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net and all of the regular contributors to the news megathread for making it into an international hub of information exchange and learning. Never did I ever think that the current iteration we see today would've stemmed from the first war Containment thread during those confusing and anxious days. Additionally i want to show my appreciation towards @Awoo@hexbear.net, and @kristina@hexbear.net, for being positive figures of hexbear in both their work, posting, and presence. You both, alongside all the many other people here, make the site a pleasant and enjoyable island in the morass that is the general internet.

2 @GarbageShoot@hexbear.net has come so far in the past year I'm more than confident that if we ever met IRL he would radiate Stalinium.

3 the mods of the fake news comm. For the few times you've gotten me, you suck. soviet-heart. I also want to shout out retired poster @UlyssesT@hexbear.net for leading his own daily one-man crusade across hexbear and the wider federal network. You are gone but not forgotten.

4 the only person that consistently comes to mind for me is @Aru@lemmygrad.ml, for consistently participating in the news mega and assisting in giving us English speakers a glimpse into the Arabic world in a manner only a native speaker can. This of course extends to all our other multi-lingual friends and comrades here who take their ernest time to help us learn more about the world beyond our screens.

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 33 points 8 months ago

Can I have a participation trophy to piss off the chuds?

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 27 points 8 months ago

You are automatically nominated for the hidden 5th category, "Most Likely To Post Cute Pics of your Pet"

  1. Most influential Hexbear: @UlyssesT@hexbear.net

Just one of our strongest posters all around. Didn't log off until real life took his attention. He's the only poster I've seen who will respond to absolutely everyone. Giant comment threads, good sprinkling of our emojis. overall powerful aura with a lot of posting HP

But since he's not here to accept it, I gotta give the actual nomination to @WhyEssEff@hexbear.net

Every emoji is like a little morsel of candy and I can't imagine how the site culture would look like without our lovely little pictures of indie game characters and pig shit lea-happy

  1. Most likely to be called a tankie offline: @Alaskaball@hexbear.net

very pure "yes I'm a communist" vibe

  1. Best in Community Engagement: @Nakoichi@hexbear.net

Love the work he's done with the Chunka Luta Network . Overall cool comrade

  1. Best non local user

not really sure. I see some sometimes and they can be cool. Still feels like I'm getting to know all the folk from federation. But probably someone from lemmygrad

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 30 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)
  1. @Melina@hexbear.net, for better or worse. Like, think about it: they must be responsible for the most uses of the "Block community" button on Hexbear.
  2. @Alaskaball@hexbear.net
  3. There's a few different ways you could take this tbh. Like, posting numbers, commenting numbers, starting things like bookclubs, etc. I think in terms of "Person who generates the most engagement in the community" then I think @RNAi@hexbear.net with his incredible posting (and commenting!) numbers is a big influence.
  4. @Aru@lemmygrad.ml
[-] HornyOnMain@hexbear.net 25 points 8 months ago

Melina's asked me to accept the award on faer behalf since apparently you have faer blocked so fae couldn't accept faerself

Melina is the only user that I have literally fully blocked. I have no regrets. Undoubtedly influential

  1. Most Influential Hexbear – @thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net for pretty much carrying the general megathread on his back solo throughout the year.

  2. Most likely to be called a tankie offline – honestly @UlyssesT@hexbear.net, factoring that you also have to push your ideological opposites to the point of this in a conversation, and they're an extremely powerful poster in that regard.

  3. Best in Community Engagement – @makotech222@hexbear.net for quickly whipping up the new emote shortcode search into a prod-ready state days before we were to push the major site upgrade on a whim in response to my post about shortcodes being fucky 07

ok this is really hard

  1. @PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net and @UlyssesT@hexbear.net both got me back into reading for fun this year so shout out to my hexbear teachers. yall are my most influential because you have influenced my offline life in a helpful way.
  2. haha ive been called a tankie offline before! but for the nomination I will say @Pluto@hexbear.net because i feel like their earnesty and passion must carry over into their organizing.
  3. @wombat@hexbear.net for making sure we all show up on time (well our version of on time haha) for movies on hextube!!

honorable mentions. @autismdragon@hexbear.net one of my besties on here, crazy to think our friendship started with an heated argument to say the least. @Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net my favorite bird in the whole world! and someone who understands all my gender stuff. @Nakoichi@hexbear.net for just exxelent all around posting @corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net for always being a sweetheart

and all my hextube comrades to be honest I love yall the most!!!! you make my days better regularly.

Most Influential Hexbear of 2023
@makotech222@hexbear.net for all of the site work and the very visible emoji selector upgrades

Most likely to be called a tankie offline
@Nakoichi@hexbear.net because it seems to happen a lot online despite being a huge anarchist

Best in Community Engagement
@kristina@hexbear.net for getting the traa train rolling

Best non local user
see some fun ones but can't really recall one to single out

[-] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 20 points 8 months ago

because it seems to happen a lot online despite being a huge anarchist

It's already happened lol

[-] Pluto@hexbear.net 28 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Edit: This is the official post compiling everything I mentioned with the three top categories.

  1. Okay, I pick @Othello@hexbear.net as Most Influential Hexbear of 2023, though I haven't been here long (well, most influential to me).

  2. Most likely to be called a tankie off-line should go to @PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net but also, like, thanks for actually valuing my opinion on CPUSA instead of waving me off; I don't think anyone replied to what I was saying in the previous thread you tagged me for lmao. Also, as someone said elsewhere, you're kinda everywhere here, at least when I initially entered Hexbear.

  3. Oh, and @context@hexbear.net as best when it comes to community engagement; I think that neurodiversity thread recently was much needed, for example. I wasn't sure if Othello should take this place or not.

  4. Oh, and as said previously, @PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml gets the fourth category.

Honorable mentions:

@WhyEssEff@hexbear.net (CrossCode FTW)

@corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net (genuinely warms my heart)

@Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net (what a majestic creature...)

@BeamBrain@hexbear.net (also: check out his recent game that he made; please play it to help 'em out)

@SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net (gone through a lot and helped me out too)

@UlyssesT@hexbear.net (been real nice to me, from what I can remember)

@Ho_Chi_Chungus@hexbear.net (BIG CHUNGUS)

@Catradora_Stalinism@hexbear.net (I believe we pretty much hit it off the bat when starting out and they were in Lemmygrad back when I was there)

Lmao I have in fact never been called a tankie offline, or I don't remember it now? I am probably too scary to be rude to in person though. You'd need to find people who are incredibly online AND give off a vibe that you won't punch them in the face before they'd ever utter the word.

I am honoured though. I certainly do not hide being a communist outside the workplace.

I would like to give a special shoutout to some of my favourite posters who don't necessarily fit the above categories:

Huge shoutout to anyone who contributes to the megathreads. They're like the heartbeat of the entire site.

Uphold TC69 thought always.

  1. @transcomrade69@hexbear.net . I joined hexbear after she left but I will always miss her nonetheless. What a great comrade
  2. @ulyssest@hexbear.net because he killed Henry Kissinger. Only a true tankie would do such a thing
  3. @thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net for the megas. Honestly fantastic work.
  4. @yogthos@lemmy.ml is a renowned comrade, the first non-chapo to make a megathread, and my personal pick for #4.

Uhhhh

tooo hard to chose individual ppl

Number 3 nomination: @SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net : Their hard efforts put into the newsposting are a boon for all. Their contributions during discussions I always appreciate.

Okay for number 4 tho: @yogthos@lemmygrad.ml : Prolific newsposter and a very well informed individual. I see them while browsing both hexbear and lemmygrad

@Othello@hexbear.net : Just a lovely person all-around, congrats on the wedding!

My nomination for number 2: @buckykat@hexbear.net : Extremely based poster, banning this user would be revisionism tantamount to the Kruschevite counterrevolution

Second nomination for number 3: @kristina@hexbear.net : One of the most legendary posters on the site. Has a lot of experience organizing IRL. She is also very funny.

@Awoo@hexbear.net : I see her unique moving avatar everywhere, and its always a joy to talk with her. Tied for number 3 for news thread.

@Cromalin@hexbear.net : the largest poster on the traaaa subreddit, and has very good trans media reccs. Tied with Kristina for number 3 in trans com.

Read Unjust Depths

@BiggsOfficial@hexbear.net : Rest in peace, Great Chairman

Number 1 nomination: @Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net : single-handedly created half the jokes on this platform. C'mon its Dirtowl

@Pluto@hexbear.net : Great comrade, and its nice to have a Dwarf Planet on our team.

@corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net : The check-in threads are wonderful, and they are a good comrade all around.

Other nomination for number 2: @queermunist@lemmy.ml : hilarious effortposter, braved the liberal hordes, and very very based.

-controversial and removed

@EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net : Hilarious and extremely politically talented.

Okay this is probably too long, but these are ones I felt were worthy of the special mentions

the best way to do it isn't to reward power posters and creating competition/just giving the awards to the same people every time but instead take a totally arbitrary condition like "Most uses of the letter z relative to other letters" or "Funniest name" or "Person who created the best tagline in 2023" or "Most entertaining/insightful/interesting single comment of the year" or "Best freakout from a lemmitor to their comment"

such that it's not the same thing every year and that power posters and relative newcomers or people who like to create new accounts regularly are on the most level playing field reasonably possible
