You could always play the GOAT for free OpenTTD.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 8 points 8 months ago

Strong reccomend. This is good train game.

[-] Parsani@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

I had to uninstall this lol

Lots of good mods too, by the end I had vacuum tube trains zipping around everywhere. I wish there was a new version of this with the same general mechanics, but a completely overhauled ui. It would be better if timetabling wasn't such a nightmare too.

[-] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

I use the JGR mod and couldn't live without it. It makes timetabling so much easier. If people are interested I can provide my NewGRF list too.

[-] Parsani@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

I'll have to check that out. I'd heard of it, but after I had stopped playing. One day I'll start a new save

I loke transport fever (and transport fever 2). It has trains blob-no-thoughts

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 6 points 8 months ago

trains are cool. thanks!

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

Reminded me that LoZ: Spirit Tracks exists

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 8 points 8 months ago

yooo, i forgot about that. thats awesome

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 14 points 8 months ago

Factorio is a train game. It's lots of other things too but it's also a train game.

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 8 points 8 months ago

thanks! i get my factory building and train fix right now with satisfactory, sort of a first person factorio. i appreciate the suggestion!

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

Oh yes, love satisfactory too. Factorio is significantly deeper but maybe less "fun" at times. They both scratch a similar itch!

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 5 points 8 months ago

for sure! i cant wait for the full release of satisfactory, i feel like theyd be closer. but both games are fun for different things, factorio has many more mechanics and is a lot more polished, but satisfactory can get absolutely insane, too.

Never played that one, but the train is a great way to get to 5 stars in V -- cops think that since you're not in a car, you must be a pedestrian, so they park their vehicles and get out. When they send out the helicopters, you'll want to be on a low car ahead of a tall one so you can alternate between shooting at them and taking cover. Not dying is pretty easy; the challenge is racking up kills quickly, because you always lose all your stars in a tunnel.

[-] RNAi@hexbear.net 6 points 8 months ago

I am ancient

[-] mechwarrior2@hexbear.net 12 points 8 months ago

both of these are more of a vibe than proper "Games" but they are free and playable in-browser

2.5D endless procedurally generated train conductor sim Cab Ride

https://powersaurus.itch.io/cab-ride

Drive a train, forever, through a dreamlike land.

Transport passengers to their destination.

Watch the world go by.

Listen to chilled out chiptune music.

In Cab Ride you can drive thousands of different train routes through rolling hills, winding tunnels and weaving between the tall buildings of vast cities. You can drive the train for as long as you like. When you're ready to end your journey, hold down the left arrow key to announce the last station. Stopping at stations along the way means you can pick up and drop off passengers. Try and stop at the marker at each station for a high rating. Or don't! It's up to you.

Cab Ride is a casual train simulation, not aiming for real world accuracy, but like a real train, it takes a while to brake. If you're overshooting stations, watch for the alert for the next station and reduce the throttle so you're ready to stop.

twee hand-drawn cat village tram conductor "interactive illustration" Short Trip

https://alexanderperrin.itch.io/short-trip

Hello! It's your turn to operate the scenic railway. The local town cats would love to join you for the ride too, if that's ok.

Short Trip is the first instalment in a collection of interactive illustrations created for the web. It has been created as a study into capturing the essence of graphite on paper within a digital context, and to learn more about web-based graphics technologies. Short Trip will run on most devices supporting WebGL, including mobile devices.

Minecraft with the Create mod lets you make factories and coordinate logistics to move materials from one to another with a rail network, and you can build the trains yourself block by block (including steam whistles)! It's the most immersive train game IMO because you get to set up ever little detail, every signal every junction up to your needs.

[-] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 9 points 8 months ago

You can also make animals drive them and they get little train conductor hats.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 10 points 8 months ago

Including Minecraft bees (trans icon)

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 6 points 8 months ago

Any time bees come up in any context my gaming buddies start telling stories about that one time I succumb'd to bee madness in an old mod pack.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

Haha I remember I once streamed a base showcase to my friends and when I had to explain that the power generation for my world eating quarry came from an array of magical bees hooked up to machines that would harvest their honey, I can now never escape the capitalist allegations.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

Strong reccomend Create. It's a very cool train game.

[-] gaycomputeruser@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

There are a variety of minecraft rail mods. I really like railcraft as it lets you build your own train hold/waiting logic. Some others are immersive railroading and maincraft transit railway.

[-] Diputs@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

I'm glad to see someone else thought to mention the Create mod when faced with this question, however, one must also mention the addon mod Create: Interactive, it would in theory allow you to create a self-perpetuating giant train base that drills its path forward, creates more rail in a built in production line with the drilled stone and deploys it automatically. Let's not forget the one addon specifically made to expand the train system as well. train-shining

[-] Sinistar@hexbear.net 11 points 8 months ago

Workers and Resources has a great train sim. The game's simulation is pretty intense though so if all you want to think about is trains then it's not a great pick.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 9 points 8 months ago

They're train themed puzzles more than anything, but Train Valley (and its sequel) are pretty fun

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

i've played those! they were really fun

[-] LarsAdultsen@hexbear.net 9 points 8 months ago

I really enjoyed MS Train simulator back in the day, but it is old. I don't even know if it'll run on modern systems

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

kinda like MS flight sim, but for trains?

[-] LarsAdultsen@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

Haha, it's so much more limited than MSFS, but, bless it's heart, it tries

Metro Exodus is sort of about a train

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

i tried it, wasn't really a fan. thanks for the suggestion though!

[-] JuryNullification@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

Train Sim World is fun but definitely steal it because there’s like $2000 of DLC

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

thanks, will do o7

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 7 points 8 months ago

Going to mention Choo Choo Charles, probably the weirdest train game.

And also Voidtrain, which is about building a train as you explore endless train tracks through the void. It's been a few months since I played but it was pretty content-light back then. Cool premise, just needs a lot of fleshing out.

What's that other one. Unrailed! is a neat coop game where you have to mine resources to build a train track for your little always-moving train.

[-] Beaver@hexbear.net 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Come play insanely complex train board games at 18xx.games

[-] ryepunk@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

For a nice simple train game that isn't really technical or complex I enjoy "Sid Meier's Railroads!"

It's like an arcade tycoon game. Pick an area and you can randomize the geography or use somewhat real life. You can grow cities by supplying products to them. And you'll have rival companies trying the same, you can buy them out if you're doing very well. It's a nice lite game I used to play while listening to podcasts.

[-] The_Jewish_Cuban@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

I have unrailed! If anyone in this thread wants to play with me powercry-1

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

Wild Guns beat level Armored Train. Resident Evil 0 gets bad once you get off a train

[-] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

Station to Station is a pretty little puzzle game where you have to build diorama-style train tracks on little boards of landscape.

[-] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

The Final Station is a post apocalyptic train driver game, I don't know how well it holds up, but I vaguely recall liking it.

[-] blakeus12@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

I will check it out. thanks!
