Choosing not to rant on the obvious reasons this garbage shouldn't exist. I don't have kids or have much experience with them in general, but I do know one thing about them that seems to be a universal fact: They fucking love repetition. You made a randomize story button for literally the one age demographic that does not get bored of hearing the same thing over and over again. The first thing they're gonna do when they finish their first slop storytelling is "I want to hear that again."

I guess the idea is to let the kid interact with it and have them direct the story to be what they want. I don't think there's a way to do that automatically without generative AI or a remote center full of underpaid workers, honestly. Maybe we should use our technology and tremendous productive power to shorten the work day, maximize the time parents have to play pretend with kids and actually get those language skills working as well as they can instead of relying on AI slop?

Choose your own adventure novels have been doing this with zero silicon. Video games like Minecraft are the pinnacle of choose your own narrative game design and don't deplete the ozone layer. It's just capitalists trying to keep their heads above water as they move to the next shiniest thing. There is no logic to this. Like there's more money to be had in non-AI slop but the capitalists are so detached that they'll sink the entire ship.

You are right. I looked up and this toy comes with an App(TM) which lets you choose which kind of story you want to come up with. Still terrible but it makes the AI angle more understandable.

The kid might not care, but these are important and formative years. They are learning how stories work, how to process stories and pull the information they want, how to form their own stories.

This is the psychological equivalent of giving an infant Coca-Cola. Kids who ingest this garbage, this "highly processed corn-based snack" of the mind, will be stunted compared to the kids whose parents were willing to spend time around their spawn.

Ime while marketing has a huge influence, kids can actually tell the difference between a meaningful story and a series of events cobbled together, and will gravitate towards the former. Also, parenting involves a degree of curation!
