The Army Corps of Engineers has been removing tons of contaminated soil from the Cold War-era site since 2018 and has long maintained that residential areas were not affected by the work.

However, The Blade in Toledo said its tests showed radioactivity levels 10 times higher than normal in water from a drinking fountain at Eastwood Middle School, 45 times higher than normal at the Luckey Library and 1,731 times higher than normal at a water pump near athletic fields.

“We’ve got to get to the bottom of this,” said Lt. Col. Robert Burnham, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Buffalo District, which oversees the cleanup.

met a different guy the day after, and 2 days later met another different guy.

I have ADHD. Testing the pills on a higher dosage rn which makes me insane (real). Never allowed myself to think sexual thoughts in public as a teenager in fear of consequences. Never dated, never had experience with a relationship.

I read a lot of resources online and I overthink a lot. Especially with my sexuality. The meds made it easier. The encouragement of my friends also made it easier.

So I downloaded Grindr. I got messaged - the usual. The meds does a funny thing of increasing my libido, makes me a bit more impulsive, gives me more energy and supercharges my heart where it beats fast til no end and so I continued chatting. Which lead to plans being made.

Might even meet another guy later today.

I dont know if im just acting out (other aspects of my life has been really stressful and overwhelming) but I just opened the flood gates and there’s no way to close em back. So many questions about aspects of my sexuality being answered practically instantly.

Planning to take an STI test at a local clinic to establish my baselines in a few days. No doubt the frequency will tone down with time. Should I even worry? Because right now, I love it.

I quite like my launcher, but unfortunately it's closed sourced and employs some unsavoury features, despite being paid, it's limited in how many devices it can be installed on and it nags users for staying on old versions.

The issue I'm having is that recently bugs have been introduced. Widgets get randomly greyed out and I need to turn off and on the screen for them to become usable again. Also the launcher keeps appearing in Android's recent apps screen.

I find both of these things frustrating and have attempted to ask a couple times about the status of the launcher. The first time I was flat out ignored and the second time I was lambasted by a community member to not ask for ETAs. I'm not sure how asking if they're still working on things is asking for an ETA, but whatever.

I bought a lifetime license and so I can't even act like I'm paying for this, but I do feel that my purchase at least entitles me to know if development is ongoing or do I have unreasonable expectations? I'm not asking for a when, just whether or not something is happening. Especially considering these bugs were only introduced when the launcher started trying to do too much and add features that should be handled by the OS rather than the launcher, namely a "usage breaker".

I've seen people advocating for both options, but since I'm still new to Linux I'm not sure what to do. I'm currently installing Mint on my laptop to try it out, and I'm not sure if I should enable secure boot or not.

A new study released on Thursday describes a search for what are called "microlensing" events, where a planet acts as a gravitational lens that magnifies the star it's orbiting, causing it to brighten briefly. These events are difficult to capture, but can potentially indicate the presence of planets in more distant orbits. The researchers behind the new work find indications that there's a significant population of rocky super-Earths that are traveling in orbits similar to that of Jupiter and Saturn.

[...] 'Cause the croc is the mouth of the ocean
This is a fact anyone can see
That the croc is the mouth of the ocean [...]

Feel free to come up with the last line to finish the rhyme, or to relay some of your own dream lyrics

Edit: What's more disappointing than not remembering the last line is that the song was posted to a YT channel whose video titles were in like a nonexistent like Japonic-Polynesian hybrid language with a really strange looking Latin orthography, and I don't remember a single word aside from I think kieeollj for "flamingo"

Open-source, Decentralized Online Social Networks (DOSNs) are emerging as alternatives to the popular yet centralized and profit-driven platforms like Facebook or Twitter. In DOSNs, users can set up their own server, or instance, while they can actually interact with users of other instances. Moreover, by adopting the same communication protocol, DOSNs become part of a massive social network, namely the Fediverse. Mastodon is the most relevant platform in the Fediverse to date, and also the one that has attracted attention from the research community. Existing studies are however limited to an analysis of a relatively outdated sample of Mastodon focusing on few aspects at a user level, while several open questions have not been answered yet, especially at the instance level. In this work, we aim at pushing forward our understanding of the Fediverse by leveraging the primary role of Mastodon therein. Our first contribution is the building of an up-to-date and highly representative dataset of Mastodon. Upon this new data, we have defined a network model over Mastodon instances and exploited it to investigate three major aspects: the structural features of the Mastodon network of instances from a macroscopic as well as a mesoscopic perspective, to unveil the distinguishing traits of the underlying federative mechanism; the backbone of the network, to discover the essential interrelations between the instances; and the growth of Mastodon, to understand how the shape of the instance network has evolved during the last few years, also when broading the scope to account for instances belonging to other platforms. Our extensive analysis of the above aspects has provided a number of findings that reveal distinguishing features of Mastodon and that can be used as a starting point for the discovery of all the DOSN Fediverse.

A few weeks ago for uni I had to write a 750 word policy briefing based on a report of the same name by the Australia Institute, so now that I've been assessed I figured I might as well plagiarize myself a little here.

(the chart is millions of dollars for FY2024-25)

The report estimates that across federal and state/territory governments combined, Australia provided $14.9 billion in fossil fuel subsidies during FY2024-25. These were categorized as “wholly”, “primarily”, or “partly” dedicated to fossil fuel industries. Health and environmental effects / costs were not considered.

Total expenditure is dominated by federal subsidies of $12.5 billion (83.6% of all subsidies), with federal subsidies overwhelmingly comprised of tax concessions rather than direct spending. Federal concessions are in turn dominated by $10.2 billion for the Fuel Tax Credits Scheme (81.7% of federal subsidies) – the 16th most expensive item in the year’s budget – and $1.7 billion for concessional tax rates for aviation fuel usage (13.6% of federal subsidies). Essentially all (99.5%) federal subsidies are categorized as “wholly” dedicated to fossil fuel industries.

State/territory subsidies comprise mostly of Queensland’s $1.8 billion (75.2% of state/territory subsidies), split across spending of $0.8 billion (34.2% of state/territory subsidies) and concessions of $1 billion (41% of state/territory subsidies). Contrasting federal subsidies, state/territory subsidies are a broader mix of “wholly”, “primarily”, and “partly” categorized subsidies and are less concentrated.

Total subsidies have been trending upwards and are projected to continue to rise, largely due to increasing fuel expenditure causing commensurate increases in related tax concessions. The report concludes that “Australia is not taking serious action on climate change” and suggests that “cutting fossil fuel subsidies would not only help achieve genuine reductions in emissions, but would save money that could be spent on public services”.

One part of the report I didn't love was their methodology in how they categorized "wholly" etc, as even RMIT ABC Fact Check called a similar claim "overblown" in 2022 (the beneficiaries of those subsidies is rarely "wholly" the fossil fuel industry as a layperson would understand the term in normal conversation).

The most interesting thing I learnt in my background research outside of the report is that the revenue from the fuel excise -- the counterpart of the majority subsidy, federal tax concessions via the fuel tax credits scheme -- is expected by the PBO to be "effectively zero" by 2050 even though the cost of the tax concessions is expected to continue rising.

I've also infodumped some more notes about this here in a pretty unpolished form, but you shouldn't read that because I'm self-conscious and having an existential crisis over the fact I've publicly published something on a topic I'm far from an expert on.
