snake postI'd like to talk about one of my favorite ball python morphs, the banana gene. It is an incomplete dominant trait first produced by NERD in 2003. Incomplete dominant means an animal only needs one copy of the gene for it to express itself, however a "super" (homozygous) form exists when both parents pass the gene on to their offspring.

An adult and baby banana ball python. As you can see, they are bright yellow with black spots as adults, looking very much like a banana. They have white bellies. This is a different gene from albinism, and they have normal eyes. Here's a wild type for comparison:

One thing that is very unique to the banana gene is it is sex linked (the only ball python morph that does this, not sure about other animals). Female bananas will produce equal split of male and female, banana and wild type. However in males, it is linked to how the sire inherited the gene. If he inherited it from his father's side, he is a "male maker" and almost all of the bananas he produces will be male. The sex split and morph split are the same (50/50), but almost all the males will have the gene and almost all the females will be wild type. Same if he inherited the gene from his mother, just reversed (this is a "female maker"). A common myth/misunderstanding is that this holds true all the time, it does not. A male maker can still produce female banana ball pythons, and male wild types. Same for female makers, in the other direction. Roughly 3% of snakes produced from male bananas will be one of these instead of the "expected" outcome.

These are both super bananas if you wanted to see what they look like ^^

Good morning Moss:

Did you know that in terms of human companionship, Flareon is objectively the most huggable Pokemon? While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they are capable of controlling it, so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. Along with that, they have a lot of fluff, making them undeniably incredibly soft to touch. But that's not all, they have a very respectable special defense stat of 110, which means that they are likely very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Because of this, if you have a bad day, you can vent to it while hugging it, and it won't mind. It can make itself even more endearing with moves like Charm and Baby Doll Eyes, ensuring that you never have a prolonged bout of depression ever again.

fr flareon is the best eeveelution tho

[โ€“] Moss@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

Flareon is very cute but I would want to hug Jolteon, my favourite eeveelution. They look like such a fluffy little gremlin

No, it's short for mossy cobblestone. Not joking, people started calling me mossy cobblestone before I decided I liked the name Moss

[โ€“] Thallo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've been meaning to write something interesting since you posted this but have just kept pushing it off and I fear I'm running out of time, so while I don't have anything cool or interesting to say, here is at least one more funny number in your inbox and I hope you slept well <3

[โ€“] Moss@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Wadda hell, that does not make sense to me

[โ€“] awth13@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't even know if that's true btw, it's a voiceline from one of my childhood video games.

good morning! did you know that the average cumulous cloud weighs over 500kg/1 million lbs?

[โ€“] Moss@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

But they look so fluffy... I think I could pick up a cloud if I needed to

[โ€“] lilypad@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hiii! Gotta make the number go up! Since youll read this when you wake: how did you sleep?

[โ€“] Moss@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The number has gone up! I've not been sleeping too well recently, I really don't know why because I've not had sleep issues in the past. Maybe anxiety related? But my anxiety isn't nearly as bad now as it has been in the past.

I took drowsy pills which made my sleep really weird. I had a lot of dreams, but the only one I remember was that I broke into Jerma's jerma-bottom house and went through his room, not for sinister reasons, just because I was excited. I don't even watch his streams, so I don't know why he's showing up in my dreams. I thought about stealing his wallet but decided against it. That was a weird one.

[โ€“] lilypad@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Im sorry your sleep hasnt been too good lately! But have fun with the non-nefarious B&E dreams lol ^^

[โ€“] Disaster_of_Passion@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

uuuh, something cool or interesting, okay okay...

lockpicking rambleokay, so, most standard door locks are made by like one of 5 or 6 different manufacturers, right? They're relatively simple and can actually be picked by something called a bump key, which is a key shaped to fit in one of the specific manufacturer's locks and has the teeth level in such a way that if you insert the key into the lock and strike the back of it it can knock the pins into place. So if you own a set of like six of these bump keys and know how to identify which locks a door has, you can pick most door locks without having to do a "skilled attack!"

[โ€“] Moss@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

Ooh interesting, at one point I was gonna learn to pick locks but I never ended up following through. Mayhaps I will look into these bump keys
