snake post
I'd like to talk about one of my favorite ball python morphs, the banana gene. It is an incomplete dominant trait first produced by NERD in 2003. Incomplete dominant means an animal only needs one copy of the gene for it to express itself, however a "super" (homozygous) form exists when both parents pass the gene on to their offspring.
An adult and baby banana ball python. As you can see, they are bright yellow with black spots as adults, looking very much like a banana. They have white bellies. This is a different gene from albinism, and they have normal eyes. Here's a wild type for comparison:
One thing that is very unique to the banana gene is it is sex linked (the only ball python morph that does this, not sure about other animals). Female bananas will produce equal split of male and female, banana and wild type. However in males, it is linked to how the sire inherited the gene. If he inherited it from his father's side, he is a "male maker" and almost all of the bananas he produces will be male. The sex split and morph split are the same (50/50), but almost all the males will have the gene and almost all the females will be wild type. Same if he inherited the gene from his mother, just reversed (this is a "female maker"). A common myth/misunderstanding is that this holds true all the time, it does not. A male maker can still produce female banana ball pythons, and male wild types. Same for female makers, in the other direction. Roughly 3% of snakes produced from male bananas will be one of these instead of the "expected" outcome.
These are both super bananas if you wanted to see what they look like ^^

Soooooo I’m definitely coming out at work after over 2 years of being in the closet. Out on medical leave right now and I’m pretty nervous to do it, should I just send an email? Or something? Change my picture on slack and show up in a dress? Idk haha
Why not both an email and picture change?
Always good to see you around, Jenniferrr!
I think you’re right! I’m thinking I’ll also just have a sit down with all my close coworkers and give them the run down haah
Congrats! Obviously, this will very between workplaces, but I scheduled a meeting with my boss, the institute director and HR (note that I work in academia) where I discussed my plans for social transition/asked questions about policies. I then showed up to the weekly social hour presenting full femme with a pride pins and pronoun buttons, and then I put some pride stickers up on my cube.
Idk how well it worked as no one other than the folks I came out to personally have brought it up, but there hasn't been any transphobic actions/behaviors that I have perceived at least.
Nice!! That all sounds like a good idea tbh. Honestly I can’t tell if this will be a surprise to anyone though because I have been transitioning for a year and a half, all of which I’ve been working at this job… I was basically just planning on not wearing a hoodie and showing up in a women’s t shirt basically lol. My job is very casual so it feels weird for me to come in in a dress or something :/ idk why this part is so stressful I have been completely out in every other facet of my life for a year now
I was transitioning at work as well, but also wearing makeup frequently and some alt/punk tinged fashion so I don't think it should have been a complete shock. For my full femme outfit, I just wore a bright women's v-neck and a padded bra along with a full face of makeup, not a dress or a skirt (I have to wear pants for my job since I work in a lab).
