Julius Nyerere, born on this day in 1922, was a socialist and anti-colonial Tanzanian politician who promoted a Pan-Africanist ideology known as Ujamaa, which means "extended family" or "brotherhood" in Swahili.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922 in Butiama, on the eastern shore of lake Victoria in north west Tanganyika. His father was the chief of the small Zanaki tribe. He was 12 before he started school (he had to walk 26 miles to Musoma to do so). Later, he transferred for his secondary education to the Tabora Government Secondary School. His intelligence was quickly recognized by the Roman Catholic fathers who taught him. He went on, with their help, to train as a teacher at Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda). On gaining his Certificate, he taught for three years and then went on a government scholarship to study history and political economy for his Master of Arts at the University of Edinburgh (he was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. In Edinburgh, partly through his encounter with Fabian thinking, Nyerere began to develop his particular vision of connecting socialism with African communal living.

On his return to Tanganyika, Nyerere was forced by the colonial authorities to make a choice between his political activities and his teaching. He was reported as saying that he was a schoolmaster by choice and a politician by accident. Working to bring a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping he achieved this in 1954 with the formation of TANU (the Tanganyika African National Union). He became President of the Union (a post he held until 1977), entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960. A year later Tanganyika was granted internal self-government and Nyerere became premier. Full independence came in December 1961.

In 1962, Nyerere was elected the first president of Tanganyika, a predecessor to modern Tanzania and a newly independent republic. His administration emphasized decolonizing society and the state, also unsuccessfully pursuing a Pan-Africanist East African Federation with Uganda and Kenya.

In 1967, Nyerere issued the "Arusha Declaration", forbidding government leaders from owning shares or holding directorates in private companies, receiving more than one salary, or owning any houses that they rented to others. In compliance with this declaration, Nyerere sold his second home and his wife donated her poultry farm to a local co-operative.

Nyerere’s integrity, ability as a political orator and organizer, and readiness to work with different groupings was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed. In this he was helped by the co-operative attitude of the last British governor β€” Sir Richard Turnbull. In 1964, following a coup in Zanzibar (and an attempted coup in Tanganyika itself) Nyerere negotiated with the new leaders in Zanzibar and agreed to absorb them into the union government. The result was the creation of the Republic of Tanzania.

Nyerere's government also aided in liberation struggles elsewhere in Africa, training and aiding anti-apartheid South African groups and helping to depose Ugandan ruler Idi Amin. In 1985, Nyerere stepped down as President and was succeeded by Ali Hassan Mwinyi in a notably peaceful and stable transition of power.

"Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated."

Julius Nyerere

There is such a horrible cycle in life where if you sad, or weird, or depressed, or anything else of that ilk, than (most) people do not wish to be around you, and the fewer people around you the more sad, depressed, alone, or weird you get

it's a cycle I've been trapped in my whole fucking life

You know what really grinds my gears?

When some reply guy deboonks a valid criticism of something by hypothesizing about what could be true but doesn’t check if that actually is true they just reply with this idea I just had could be true so that’s a deboonk.

Specifically, I just saw a post about how housing affordability is worse right now than during the Great Depression, that the price of houses as a multiple of income is actually a lot worse currently than when 1 in 4 people were unemployed, and the reply guy just theorizes that since less people were employed that logically means that the wages for the employed would have been higher and like what the fuck is that nonsense argument also no it’s not true but fucking more importantly he considers the realm of hypothesis and ideation to be equivalent to data? That fucking grinds my gears.

Shaved my beard yesterday and counted cards at two places that have previously banned me - one recognized me the other did not. Ordered some non-prescription transition glasses online as the next phase of my disguise - if I can just keep changing my look just enough to keep playing at all the casinos near my house that would be so sick.

Israeli girl from my class thinks I'm either secretly a jew or some sort of Iranian spy based on my level of knowledge of jewish culture (All absorbed from tv. Most really surface level). It has made her less confident in making zionist arguments. So that's cool. I should learn more jewish facts.

Singing Daniel Kahn while working had her so impressed she's been asking around about me in the local Jewish community.

My 3 tips for driving a car you're not sure about on the freeway are 1. Have a gallon of water with you in case if you need coolant, 2. Have a fire proof blanket in case you need to smother a fire and 3. Start playing free bird. By the time it gets to the guitar solo you'll either not need the first 2 or ready to go down in flames

Talking to libs: "communism just wouldn't work, you're too idealistic about human nature"

Me increasingly: "half the population of the global west needs to go through reeducation camps"

[–] john_browns_beard@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Anyone who isn't a leftist has a really bad habit of conflating "human nature" with "human conditioning from living under a capitalist system"

I saw the Minecraft Movie. It's a baffling movie. It's actually very funny and enjoyable.

But feels like it shouldn't given the sum of it's parts. It's a real contradiction. It's somehow too faithful/literal to the source, with uncanny AF villagers/illagers, them actually crafting by throwing tiny icons down on a grid, etc, while not faithful enough in other areas, there's moving wind mills and lots of items, mobs, interactions, etc that don't really make sense if you've played the game.

It's trying too hard to be meta and reference memes (e.g. kids yearn for the mines), but also is kind of really sincere in the way everyone interacts with the setting and less "that happened".

The real world is shown, but it's all kind of twee and magical realist to begin with (there's a bit with a jet pack and another with a mobile petting zoo strapped to a taxi) which is odd. But works. There's ~3 random diegetic songs just because Jack Black is a singer. There's all these weird choices. It's really weird. But I'd probably watch it again. IDK.

Listened to the latest free trillbillies on the way in to work today and they had a guest on who was such a condescending prick.

The vibes on that show are usually pretty easygoing so it was pretty jarring. At one point one of the regular hosts said something makes "you" feel a certain way, like general you. Like "seeing a good horror movie makes you a little uneasy" and the guy scolds him for not saying "one" instead because he personally disagrees with the sentiment (which was also asinine because the sentiment was that seeing an object at a hotel and not discussing or photographing it but having an ad for it show up immediately on Twitter makes you feel like you're in a dream, in a lynchian way because real life isn't supposed to have motifs like that that occur with no real connection to one another, and the guest disagreed that cell phones could ever be anything other than annoying, not dreamlike or interesting in any eay- so he objected to the word "you" being used).

it's a bit strange that 'czar' is a yankee political term for executive positions without a bad taste. was it supposed to be negative when it was first used? or an 'appropriation' of perceived brutal language for power but now it's for good we promise?

currently watching The Battle at Lake Changin. it is incredibly cheesy but I love it so far. There's a scene where the company it's following for the majority of the movie is stuck moving through the mountains in subzero freezing weather, eating potatoes as their rations, huddled together out of the wind, and then it cuts to the American soldiers enjoying a large thanksgiving meal, lots of turkey and sides etc etc. it reminded me of when the blowback guys talked about it in the Korean war season, how Chinese soldiers had very limited rations, often limited to bits of granola, grains, dried fruit etc.

the effects in the movie are also very cheesy, lots of big explosions, some awkward CGI if you look closely, but overall very enjoyable! will probably watch the sequel tomorrow.
