Okay I haven't heard of a lot here.

I don't know if it's the most obscure or deep cut but my favorite vote goes to Moral Orel. It gets dark in a way that doesn't look like it.

Billy and Mandy and Duck Dodgers imo don't belong to this list

Surprised you didn't add the MTV one such as AEon Flux, The Head, The Maxx. Aeon in particular is a favorite of mine, watching it is very wtf. I think it should belong to this list.

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

1st and second season: haha, oh orel

3rd :

Oh my god I thought this was Angela Anaconda. I fucking hate this animation style.

[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Actual deepcut: cybersix.

Edit: although edited from the comics to be much more child friendly. Forgot the original prompt.

[–] DadVolante@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Adding a few.

The Head, Liquid Television, The Maxx, Tom goes to the Mayor, Tripping the Rift, Primer, Tom and the Devil, The Critic, Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo, Primal, Mission Hill , Friday: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Aeon Flux, Assy McGee , Aqua Teen (not sure if this counts, honestly), Perfect Hair Forever, Superjail, Happy Tree Friends, Venture Bros - God tier I'm sure I'll think of others

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

If you're going to list Space Ghost you have to have the Herculoids.

Drawn Together was hilarious. It ended because sponsors were too uncomfortable advertising alongside it. It could never get made today.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

My journey into queer media started with Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World. If you've never seen it, I'm not sure what to tell you but you should.

Also just looked it up and Alan Cumming and Margaret Cho did voices in it? I gotta rewatch that shit.

Also shout out to Yvon of the Yukon cause ytv was just why (the fuck) tv actually.

Cat party is still my favourite ringtone.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 15 hours ago

Do you have bluetooth?

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Cat party? It’s all about Dog Party now.

I wasn't into Megas XLR but it was part of cartoon Fridays when I was in school and probably belongs in this list.

You can't list Oblongs, Undergrads, and Clone High without mentioning Mission Hill.

Chilly Beach is probably a deep cut for non-Canadians. I most often saw it described as Canadian South Park.

I'm not sure if it counts as obscure but Invader Zim also aired around this time.

Going back a bit further, there was Duckula, where the latest in a line of vampiric ducks was resurrected using ketchup instead of blood and became a vegetable vampire.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was made into a cartoon of questionable suitability for children.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago

+1 for Mission Hill. Bling Blong.

Adding a few more of questionable obscurity, idk if these are well known or not, since many of the ones OP posted I thought were well known. So that'll have to be judged independently but at least these all are good and sorta fit.

Assy McGee

Celebrity Deathmatch (claymation, I count it.)

Harvey Birdman

Home Movies

Sealab 2021

Stripperella

Xavier Renegade Angel

Also if it doesn't have to be "adult" (Billy and Mandy on OG list) then add:

KaBlam!

Freakazoid!

[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Megas XLR was great. I very much dig giant robots.

Invader Zim, Clone High, Duckula (and Dangermouse (original) are all very good - but of them only Clone High is aimed at people older than 14 (not that older people don't or didn't appreciate them) none of them feel obscure to me, although neither Clone High nor Invader Zim were well known in the UK when released in North America, but Internet word of mouth got them known in time.

Chilly Beach, Oblongs, Undergrads, and Mission Hill I have never heard of. So deep enough, at least to a Brit of my age.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Will def look into Chilly Beach

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 14 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see Aeon Flux mentioned yet. The Maxx is very good too. Duckman I remember being hilarious, but I dunno if starring Jason Alexander counts as a deep cut.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 4 points 13 hours ago

I'll 1 up you and go with Liquid Television, where Aeon Flux started-- like Tracy Ulman & the Simpsons.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 11 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

Xavier: Renegade Angel, dunno if it counts because it's computer animation but some good TV-MA psychedelic social satire

[–] badbrainstorm@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Vernon Chatman before South Park was great! Not that he wasn't great for SP.

Another that doesn't meet the qualification is Wonder Showzen. So great!

The Heart She Holler was pretty good too

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I remember loving this show as a kid! I still laugh when I think about "douchebag" written in cursive.

You may be happy to know there is an archive of all the episodes :)

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (3 children)

12 oz. Mouse. Twelve is also the number of fans the show has.

Edit: shoutout to !12ozmouse@adultswim.fan where I am the only person who posts.

[–] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 7 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

All I remember of that show was catching it on a VHS after I left it recording to grab squidbillies one night, and there was a scene of a shark trying to start a car for a really, really long time, which was pretty damn funny.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 15 hours ago

That's a great episode lol

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

“You barely piece of suck-ass car.”

[–] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

You're not gonna believe this, my upvote just got you to 12

Yeah loved that series, had no idea that it was ever considered to be continued

Fritz the Cat. Not to be confused with Felix the Cat. Fritz the Cat was, essentially, an adults only version of Felix. And by adult only I mean pornographic.

I'm also not seeing anyone mention Mission Hill so throw that onto the pile. It's hella good.

Also Clone High.

[–] arotrios@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Salute from the old skool! And oh my brother, does the internet archive have a treat for you...

All of the adult swim shows like ATHF, Brak Show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Squidbillies, Home Movies, Metalocalypse, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Sealab 2021, and probably a few others I can't remember. Also, not animated but I would put Sifl & Olly in the mix because it fucking rocks.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 15 hours ago

Everybody should check out the adultswim.fan instance which has communities for all these shows as well as general ones like !adultswim@adultswim.fan and !tv_film@adultswim.fan

[–] badbrainstorm@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Heck yeah to all these!

I had a black cat with green eyes I named Sifl. Got attitude from quite a few people about what TF was wrong with me for naming a cat after syphilis...

Hoops is a recent one that cracked my shit up, and I was bummed didn't get another season of two

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone else remember the Oblongs?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

The oblongs and quads (which used to air back to back when I watched) are like a fever dream. What the fuck, actually.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

Yvon of the yukon

[–] RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

SlackerCats - obscure, ran for half a season

Clerks The Animated Series - obscure, ran for half a season

Carol and the end of the world (Mainstream but wildly serene, surreal, and overtly human)

Moral Oral - pretty dark adult show

Ren and Stimpy - pretty dark for a kids show

I'm sure I'll think of a few more

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I'm surprised Ren and Stimpy made it in the obscure list. They were about as popular as anything when they were on.

Ralph Bakshi made an animated series for HBO called Spicy City. It is very adult, and not something I see mentioned often.
