On this day in 1969, the Cordobazo Uprising began in the city of Córdoba, Argentina as a general strike, with workers seizing the city, burning the corporate headquarters of Citroën and Xerox, and clashing with the army.

The rebellion took place under the military dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Onganía, who had seized power in a coup in 1966. Onganía's government had suspended the right to strike, froze workers' wages, suppressed communist movements, and extended the age of retirement.

In the wake of widespread violent state repression against protesters, the labor union "CGT de los Argentinos", led by Agustín Tosco, called for national strike on May 30th, 1969. In Cordoba, the general strike and protests began one day earlier.

On the first day of the protests, police opened fire on thousands of protesters, killing a worker named Maximo Mena, causing the strike to escalate into a citywide revolt, leading to widespread destruction of property and seizing of city spaces. Onganía crushed the rebellion with the military, and Agustín Tosco was arrested for his role in the rebellion.

why the fuck do people always make baked beans that are so god damned sweet? idk why this bugs me so much. i used to like baked beans but the canned stuff always tastes super sweet, and then my dad started making his own and made it even sweeter. Why the fuck does every baked bean recipe i've ever heard of make shit taste like fucking candy? make it a savory dish for once

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

Agree super strongly. I used to think I hared baked beans. Turns out I just hate when they're bake in molasses.

Have you suffered enough to justify your existence today?

[–] RION@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

For a brief moment in time (till rent's due) I have a positive net worth, which hasn't happened since I was 18. Feels nice, but also scary because the only way this happened was nothing going wrong for a while. I guess if stuff happens it happens so no use worrying, but still...

Did you know that face cards were invented to prevent Christians and Muslims from playing the same card games?

I got an estimate to fix my car and the guy doing it kept talking and talking. He was mostly pleasant, but I have a hard time with long interactions with people who don't know me.

I'm fairly certain I'm neurodivergent because "being normal" is exhausting for me. When I'm with people who know me, I'm fine, I could conversate for hours. But with strangers I feel like I'm an actor in a play I really don't want to be in.

I want to make falafel from scratch but would need to buy a food processor thinking-about-it

Ive been trying to justify purchasing one for a while and I might actually do it this time

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You can get a little one pretty cheaply probably around 20 which is good enough for most things, it's possible to dice the ingredients enough by hand for falafel but probably 100 times quicker with a processor unless you're a pro. One of the best things I ever cooked was made much easier with a processor, blended together chipotle peppers and garlic for a sauce to put on roasted portobello.

i have encountered a new kind of guy: committed "Hungarian Freedom Fighter" defender with her own self-published book about grandpa the "Hungarian Freedom Fighter." did you know i'm a liar for thinking that there being a "Hungarian Freedom Fighters Incorporated" that the CIA worked with to escape some "Hungarian Freedom Fighters" means that the CIA generally supported them? i guess i respect still advocating OG anti-tankieism in 2025 because that's pretty funny?

Watching the recent Did You Know Gaming video on Gunpei Yokoi made me curious to check out the Japanese biography they mentioned ({任天堂|にんてんどう}ノスタルジー {横井|よこい}{軍平|ぐんぺい}とその{時代|じだい}). I thought it'd be fairly inaccessible, but I was surprised that I was able to get through the intro without too much difficulty—still very slowly, mind you, but I wasn't running to the dictionary every other word as I had expected. It's making me realize I might be setting myself up for failure by trying to read novels, since they tend to have all kinds of flowery language whereas nonfiction has more straightforward prose. I'm not sure I'm interested enough in Gunpei Yokoi to read this particular book, but I'm sure I can find some neat nonfiction books in my areas of interest that haven't been translated yet.

Backed my car into a power pole. So mad at myself. I was hurrying because I wanted to to get home, backed in to do a delivery. The pole had an electrical box on it and it creased a corner on my trunk and broke the backup light lens. Messed up the paint on the bumper when it bent, too.

Car insurance is such a scam. I've given them at least 20k over the years with only one $1400 claim, but if I have to use the insurance, I'm going to end up paying more in increased premiums.

Hopefully I can get it fixed with only a new trunk lid. I'm going to try to see if a shop can get me a junkyard part and blend the paint. Probably be minimum 3000, I bet more like 5000 if I elect to replace the bumper.

At least I can still use it while I wait

do germans have the most varied name across languages?

you have: german/tedesco/allemand/nemets/deutsch. Somebody like french spanish italians have semi-similar names, here they are just wild, with different starting points.

One would think it's cause they formed so late, but italy was also non-existent for majority of late middle ages

SpaceX tried another Starship test, and it went broadly like the last few. That is, the first stage booster pretty much worked as expected, but the upper stage failed. At engine cutoff, it started leaking all over the place and tumbling out of control, then the door they were going to test didn't open and it burned up on reentry again.

I keep making posts in mutual aid but so far I'm discouraged because none of them had any replies. I rapidly ended up in the streets but I know this is temporary until I get a rent deposit.
