Why the fuck does every food item have an "air puffed" version now that is also more expensive. THEY'RE CHARGING FOR AIR. They're literally selling air. It's so infuriating. Brings a whole new definition to "inflation."

I won't lie lots of food tastes better air puffed but also it should cost less. It's less food. I hate capitalism agony-turbo

Buzzkill mode but wouldn't the upcharge be for additional processing/handling and potentially additional storage demands and requirements?

Its the putting being charged for, not the air.

It comes in the same size container it's just got...less. And it's like 20% more! Some things like extremely fragile crackers, maybe? But they already come in bags full of air that is expressly meant to protect them. Think something like ice cream though; it's frozen! It doesn't need any additional special handling requirements so why is the whipped version more! honk-enraged

Well, it doesn't whip itself

I think I missed this trend. What are they puffing?

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Everything! Rice! Crackers! Ice cream! Peas! Fucking everything is being dried and puffed full of air and sold at a higher price for less weight because then they can sell you air.

Wha, ice cream?

Also puffed rice is old-school and should be incredibly cheap. I assume it is way marked up to be trendy?

anecdotal evidence, but every time I've gotten ice cream from a grocery store recently it's a very very light and airy, an almost foamy texture, with lots of tiny bubbles in it, as opposed to when I go to a shop that makes their ice cream in-house.

Whipped ice cream is great because it's got a nice light texture, but. IT'S FILLED WITH AIR. WHY IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE cheeto-man

Counterpoint: puffed wheat is good.

Puffed wheat smacks hard

I'm not knocking puffed products. I'm knocking their price. I love puffed shit but it's air it should be cheaper or MAYBE the same price, not 20% more expensive!

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago

WHY AM I PAYING MORE FOR LESSS AHHHHHH kril-scream

[–] Dingus_Khan@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sort of tangential but: how is the only food item I buy that isn't shrinkflated peanut butter that I have to stir?! Every other product is in a huge container mostly empty and full of air to convince you you're buying more. BUT the fucking peanut butter is filled right to the brim so when I go to stir it, it spills everywhere because I suck at stirring

Capitalisms only innovation is finding ways to make even mundane things worse
