Biden the Sin Eater

There are probably several Democrats who could get on a stage and just repeat "Abortion" ad nauseum and beat Trump. I think the right is banging on this drum so hard that Trump is unbeatable after this assassination attempt because they want Biden to stay in. Felix made what I think is a very astute observation on the latest Chapo episode when he said that Trump attacked George Clooney for calling on Biden to step down precisely because Trump's best chance at winning is facing Biden. Plus, Joe Biden is the ultimate proof that being a fucking loser in presidential elections is not an indicator of future electoral success. And so is Donald Trump, for that matter.

You know what, good points. I shouldn’t have fallen for it so quickly

[-] Black_Mald_Futures@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago

There are numerous democrats they could run who would beat trump, the thing is they won't run any of them. It'd be like Clinton or somebody instead (who'd lose) if there's any change

[-] gueybana@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

I truly think this assassination attempt has made him unbeatable at this juncture. Motherfucker missed spectacularly and the Dems are just counting dollar signs thinking about a Trump presidency at this point.

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 37 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I honestly think people care more about bodily autonomy than they do about Trump almost dying. This has only made him unbeatable because he already was unbeatable against Biden. Any candidate that isn't a corpse and is willing to fight for the bare minimum would wipe the floor with Trump.

It would require they admit to the sins of their party though, which wouldn't be popular amongst the inner clique

[-] RedundantClam@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

I think you're right and I think that while he may have an uptick in the polls because of this, it's still July. There's a lot of time between now and November for a new candidate to beat him regardless of this moment. However I don't think the Dems will do that, and after he locks in at the convention they are really screwed when he is still Joe Biden at the next debate.

[-] VILenin@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago

It’s gonna be awkward when Biden starts off the next debate profusely apologizing to Trump for causing the assassination attempt because of “my extremist rhetoric” and begging for forgiveness before dementing out and uttering the words “I love you”

The start of a budding bromance, live on national television biden-nibblethicc-trump

[-] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

Still plenty of time left for Trump to utterly squander any and all goodwill that he might have racked up by getting an unconventional ear piercing. And if anyone is enough of a dipshit to pull that off, it's Trump.

In the grand scheme of things, though, it's not like there's much going on in the Dem field. You have a shambling corpse, sentient Xanax, the Butcher of Benghazi, the Poisoner of East Palestine, and a revolving door cast of generic Democrat empty suits, which inevitably includes governors of blue states and Eric "[boys in] blue fascism" Adams. July is a little late to try to build any kind of name recognition around most of those candidates, although your average lib is housebroken enough that they will go all-in for "not Trump," but this doesn't really help with independents/swing voters. Maybe next week's decade will be more interesting. Maybe a bearded and unhinged Al Gore will declare a challenge against Biden and cause him to die of a stroke after pointing out that you can get a Prius up to 110 MPH if you're determined enough. sicko-wistful

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

Yeah the Dems are gonna throw their hands in the air, say "well, that's it!" And run Biden as a sacrificial lamb. They don't have to though, but they're gonna

[-] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 51 points 3 months ago

The Democrats have up-and-coming stars?

I think newsom, the gretch, and pritzker all have chances at becoming president eventually

[-] MaeBorowski@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago

I think Newsom probably fits that category, absurdly enough.

If we want to feel really old, we can remember that he achieved national prominence before Barack Obama did

[-] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 46 points 3 months ago

It'd actually be hilarious if Biden voluntarily stepped down now because he didn't want to take the blame for losing to Trump.

Hillary is still very young, might as well be a teenager in Washington

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

Or step down because he accidentally announces it then no correction ever gets issued because he's really stubborn.

Gretchen Whitmer and Jay Pritzker. Governors of Michigan and Illnois respectively. Either would be a good presidential candidate now or 2028 (if there's elections). More than someone like Harris or Buttigieg.

[-] M68040@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

As far as Pritzker goes, I’ll say this - he’s done better of a job than you’d think for a hotel heir who landed in politics.

Then again, considering the past few governors… what’s Blagojevich up to these days, anyhow? He got the trump pardon, went on chapo, and vanished so far as I can tell.

It's a low bar but it's the JFK thing where if you're rich you don't have to worry about your retirement plan by pandering to other bourgeoisie so can do mild progressiveness. Though they did kill JFK.

[-] Pentacat@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

This is confusing to me, because in Israel, “up and coming” means you’re a dead soldier.

[-] Barx@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

No no the phrase for that is, "dead and cattle prodded for semen extraction".

[-] lcrtees@hexbear.net 34 points 3 months ago

The greatest "minds" in running failed elections have determined that Biden offers the best opportunity to win. They've determined that Kopmala as a replacement is worse than joementia.

Secondly, running a successful governor, like that lady from Michigan, would likely work as a path to victory. But the DNC as a collective would rather lose than concede power to someone on the outside of the current dynasties.

[-] c0smokram3r@midwest.social 34 points 3 months ago

I wish Matt Walsh would disappear 🫠🔫

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 32 points 3 months ago

I would bet that that's the plan now. But I'm going to fill out a new bingo square - Biden getting domed by some wild eyed Trump guy who thinks Biden put a hit out. Then Harris narrowly wins, Trump actually accepts it.

With how wild things have been I think there's a decent chance.

[-] booty@hexbear.net 25 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)
  1. Harris can't beat trump imo, she's too openly and coherently ghoulish.

  2. Even if she did, trump would never admit defeat to anyone under any circumstance ever.

[-] Runcible@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

coherently

The one word that could never be reasonably used to describe Harris

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 30 points 3 months ago

Yeah we're fucked

The only way for the democrats to win is to attack the agenda instead of the man, which is what they should have been doing all along but can't, because it is also their agenda. They've thrown out anything resembling a vision for a 24/7 stream of attacks on Trump as some singularly terrible person instead of being a visible symptom of an underlying rot that they themselves brought about. They have also locked in the nomination of the only person in the world who could lose to him by dismantling the Democratic process.

Sad really. It seemed overly dramatic at the time but people were correct in 2016 when they said Bernie was the last remaining off ramp.

[-] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 25 points 3 months ago

I disagree, regardless of who wins it would be smart for the Dems to replace the carcass with another neoliberal.

Like, if Trump is "unbeatable" why not replace him regardless? If Biden is the only chance of beating Trump (according to some liberals), then sure. If they feel like Biden has no chance, it only makes sense to replace him.

[-] Antiwork@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago

Dems love to lose. On purpose or not they always find unique ways to lose. And so doing anything other than the losing strategy would surprise me.

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

No one wants to take one for the team and potentially be the one holding the 50-state L. That and Biden's handlers' refusal to hop off the gravy train until the very last minute.

[-] anarchotoothbrushist@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 months ago

They’d rather have Biden lose to him than waste one of their up and coming stars on a fool’s errand.

Sure, but they could put Harris in there. She'd probably result in a less disastrous loss in the senate.

[-] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 3 months ago

They might do it just so she doesn't run again and to punish her for being a minority woman.

[-] MarxMadness@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 3 months ago

Yeah this is a tailor-made "glass cliff" scenario.

[-] MarxMadness@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 months ago

"The shooting guarantees a Trump victory" is way overstated.

The true hogs in the Trump base were always going to support him, and still will. Maybe this wins a few "Never Trump" Republicans over, but I don't think that's a sizeable amount of voters. No Democrats are going to vote Trump after this either.

Who is this supposed to win over? They'd have to be invested in bipartisanship and national unity and institutions and all that but simultaneously down to vote for a candidate whose entire political career is pissing on it. And they'd have to be disinterested enough to not have already picked a side, but interested enough remember this 100+ days from now and decide to vote, too. We're talking 5 people.

[-] Tabitha@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

"The shooting guarantees a Trump victory" is way overstated.

it's mostly a "we've tried nothing and we're out of ideas" on the Democrat's part.
