what are they even turning fascist for? it's not like there's communists anywhere near europe right now, are we just going to start doing pogroms against immigrants now? fucking worthless "continent" and i use that very loosely

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 85 points 2 weeks ago

what are they even turning fascist for?

The usual reason: "things are bad? It isn't our fault, it's the fault of the marginalized out-group! Destroy them!" capitalist-laugh

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago

While the Russia-Ukraine war made things worse for Germans, far right has been on the ascend for a while and things weren't even that bad in Germany! Like lots of issues with the German center-right, but they were doing a good job of extracting wealth from the rest of the EU.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 38 points 2 weeks ago

The previous nazi surge rode on post WW1 anguish, grief, and poverty. What the fuck is the excuse now?

[-] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Anxiety and rage about incipient climate collapse probably, coupled with the universal alienation that they especially have no vocabulary to grapple with

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 25 points 1 week ago

If only there had been some German philosopher they could read to inform them about capitalist alienation. Ah well

[-] Des@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

ctrl marlson?

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 21 points 2 weeks ago

Anxiety and rage about incipient climate collapse probably

I can believe that, particularly the redirected rage where they'd rather punch down on climate refugees than punch up toward the planet burners themselves.

[-] gueybana@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

Last time they took it out on mostly white minorities. The excuses don’t even have to be air tight

[-] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago

Love to be in danger eventually by being a marginalized out-group popuko-finger

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 50 points 2 weeks ago

Fascism doesn't require the threat of communism to exist, it simply requires capitalism to start showing signs of failure and then those who profit circle the wagons around their hoarded wealth and you're gonna get a fascism out of that if people don't stomp it down and replace capitalism so it can't happen again. They're the immune response of capitalism. The white power blood cells if you will.

someone in Germany stubs their toe

the polls: i-am-adolf-hitler

[-] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 38 points 2 weeks ago

the amount of concentrated hitler-detector that stem from a single german are enough to put the particle accelerator to shame

[-] blame@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

i dont think fascism requires the presence of communism to show up. Neoliberalism is destroying everything, the anger and energy of the masses has to be directed somewhere and there are only a few possible ways for it to go. Fascism is the least bad for the bourgeoisie.

It’s part and parcel of the US strategic ambition to destroy the European economy and to absorb its talent/labor force. Which, I remind you, is exactly what the US has been doing to the post-Soviet states and the Global South over the past century - only this time it’s the white Europeans who will become the victims of the US imperialism.

As the fascistization of Europe ramps up and the economy continues to deteriorate, more and more people - especially educated youth who become disillusioned with their country’s future - will be looking for ways out.

Where do you think they will end up emigrating to? The most attractive place is the United States, with a strong currency and living standards on par with Western European standards, not to mention their affinity to American cultural exports.

This is what the Republicans don’t understand. You cannot construct a white supremacist state in the US by keeping yourself isolated from the rest of the world. The US has always relied on immigration and will always remain so. As foreign talents (especially Chinese) are increasingly purged, this gap in the labor force will need to be replaced by someone else. And who else to replace them with than white European immigrants fleeing a destabilized Europe succumbing to war, poverty and fascism?

The Democrats understand this principle well and that’s why they are building the Fourth Reich by importing European immigrants to replace the non-white labor force.

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think even Putin realized the war in Ukraine would result in the US staging a silent coup of western Europe. It's obvious now in hindsight Russia's economy would be fine going into the war, despite harsh sanctions by NATO. What isn't obvious is how Europeans would sell themselves out to American energy and food suppliers. This whole thing has been a godsend for American companies running out of people to exploit in the US as its working class never recovered from 2008.

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It’s very clear for someone who grew up in a Global South country seeing the US playing exactly this game on Europe right now.

Imagine a country spending several tens of thousands of dollars if not more to cultivate your youth talent, subsidizing all the cost of education, giving out scholarships for top students to study overseas in prestigious Western universities, only for them to choose to stay in the West so that they can earn a salary with a purchasing power several times over what they could have earned in their home country.

When Western imperialism destroys the economy of Global South countries, they also get to poach the best and brightest talents from those countries simply because of how much better the living standards and the strength of currency in the West. Many such cases. The same is being done to Europe right now.

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Oh yeah the US has been doing this for centuries at this point. I'm just surprised the Europeans didn't realize they were getting played, given they invented colonialism. It's a real "leopards for eating people's faces party now eat faces of people who let them out of the cage."

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

GOOD post comrade

[-] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

I think you're landing on why allusions to historical fascism or the interwar period are kind of a limiting framework to understanding these parties

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Europe has been steadily losing its neocolonial grip on the Global South, so it is inevitable they turn to fascism in hopes of reasserting their position as colonial metropoly.

[-] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Does fascism really need an actual communist enemy now that they're all convinced that even the blandest liberals are literally Mao reborn though?

I'm thinking no. And that's kinda scary.

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Because they think muslims are a subhuman horde destroying Western™ civilization, and it's all orchestrated by the Woke©®™ (usually they mean jewish communists controlling society secretly)

[-] kittin@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

The Germanic brain pan is incapable of complex thought and so turns to simplistic tribalism instead of civilization

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 week ago

Few Germanic brainpans developed scientific socialism so hold your horses there.

[-] blame@hexbear.net 40 points 2 weeks ago

no this times different i promise

[-] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 37 points 2 weeks ago

This was bound to happen. Liberals win against fascists by 2% and think that they've defeated fascism forever and never try to actually remove the rot.

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

If they tried to remove the rot, they would have to remove themselves.

It is uncharted in that there can't be a state government in Thuringia and Saxony (and who knows maybe in all of germany eventually) that either doesn't include the far right or doesn't include every party except the far right

[-] space_comrade@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

Spoiler alert: it's gonna include the far right.

[-] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

It really seems like the living memory is the only reall window in which one can hope for a lesson humanity learns to persist. It's not lost on me the very last few people who remember WW2 are approaching zero by the day, and the closer to 0 living that number gets, the more violently capable fascism seems to be at re-asserting itself.

Shame the cold war is so much further than that from exiting living memory - every generation that grew up under duck and cover drills can't be redeemed.

They used this image for "hard right" which is fitting because the Iron Cross is in use by the bundeswehr last I checked, lmao.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago

Uncharted because this time the Reich will be universally supported by its neighbours.
