don't make the series which literally had a movie about a trade embargo political

also I do agree that it is political to have black and queer representation but it is equally political to not

I need more of that thread lmao holy shit

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 38 points 11 months ago

I haven't seen the rest of the thread but I assume it consists of this lib being painfully brought to the water and then stubbornly refusing to drink.

There wasn't much more (screencap with deleted tweet restored)--he ends it by saying he was "being ironic" (???). There's some nice sources for what George Lucas was thinking as he wrote the script to refute the idea that he came up with that interpretation later, though (images of text--will provide transcripts).

First image (handwritten draft notes from George Lucas predating the filming of Star Wars)

Second thoughts about Plot

1. Utapau Wasteland - Starkiller (Mifune)—a cross between Yojimbo and Seven Samurai

[...]

The Empire is like America ten years from now; after Nixonian gangsters assassinated the Emperor and were elected to power in a rigged election; created civil disorder by instigating race riots, aiding rebel groups, and allowing the crime rate to rise to the point where a "total control" police state was welcomed by the people. Then the people were exploited with high taxes, utility and transport costs.

Gangsters[:] a cartel made up of power companies, transport companies, & crime organizations. Other companies had to pay bribes to stay in business.

They increased the crime rate by slowing down the system of justice and punishment.

Second image (excerpt from The Making of Star Wars, which is also the source of the first image)

In enlarging the treatment to what became a nearly two-hundred-page rough draft, Lucas was continually aided by the transference of his Apocalypse Now ideas to the fantasy realm. Some of his notes scribbled on yellow legal pads are: “Theme: Aquilae is a small independent country like North Vietnam threatened by a neighbor or provincial rebellion, instigated by gangsters aided by empire. Fight to get rightful planet back. Half of system has been lost to gangsters … The empire is like America ten years from now, after gangsters assassinated the Emperor and were elevated to power in a rigged election … We are at a turning point: fascism or revolution.”

edit: in hindsight I should have picked a Twitter handle that doesn't exist for the deleted tweet, but it seems to be a long abandoned account anyway so oh well

sicko-wistful

[–] AcidSmiley@hexbear.net 31 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The original premise for the empire was literally "what if fascism, but it started in the US with Richard Nixon?"

[–] GreenTeaRedFlag@hexbear.net 13 points 11 months ago

That doesn't sound right

Ukraine and Israel flag guy doesn't understand a Vietnam allegory?

Edit: just realized that he'd be like so-true ”The rebels are Ukraine, Zelensky is Luke and Putler is Darth Vader!”

Imagine being trapped in a building being used as a human shield by Azov, and the last thing you hear is Mark Hamill telling you the "force will be with you" as the building is bombed.

He could've at least done his joker voice for it or something.

[–] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 15 points 11 months ago

He could've at least done his joker voice for it or something.

Would have been way more appropriate.

He also did a Zoom call or something with Ukrainian soldiers, and some of them had a Banderite flag in the background.

Plus this shirt, which Zelensky was once pictured wearing. Are we the baddies?

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 11 points 11 months ago

becoming darth vadar to own the libs.

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 7 points 11 months ago

Actually, Mr. Zelensky insists that Ukraine is on the dark side.

Ah yes. The five essential quints.

[–] pumpchilienthusiast@hexbear.net 2 points 11 months ago

And the thing about a lib is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he quotetweets ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

Coppola was originally going to just produce Apocalypse Now! And wanted George Lucas to direct. He chose to do Star Wars instead because he wanted to do something based in his own creation more or less. He was the first choice to direct Apocalypse Now! by the guy who made Apocalypse Now! Georgie ain't dumb and at the time had a pretty radical streak to him and was VERY pissed off at thr Vietnam War when it was happening. He knew what he was doing.

[–] Vncredleader@hexbear.net 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It broke George's heart not to direct Apocalypse Now!. It was a passion project and something important he wanted to make and leave him mark on, but he just couldn't make it work. Hell he had heart problems towards the end of Star Wars' production cause of stress and as early as scripting was tearing his hair out. Probably saved his life given how bad the production turned out. I remember Coppola refused to speak to George for a year because he left him to do AN on his own.

Classical liberalism. "I didn't know this thing until someone else told me about it, therefore no one ever knew about it."

Follower of the allegorical imperative I see

"Given Algernon's fate, what do you think happens to Charlie at the end of the book?"

He, uh, lives happily ever after?

Fun fact! My very first encounter with my partner was when they gave the above answer in class!

We bonded over our shared stupidity about subtext.

My girlfriend and I also regularly bond over our shared stupidity

If a guy has both ukkkraine and isntrael, it means "I stand against brutal oppression and killing of civilians except when it's targeted at brown people"

Their opinions are worthless and immediately discarded

[–] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Arrgh! George said it! He said it with his words!

[–] GinAndJuche@hexbear.net 10 points 11 months ago

He said it on 60 minutes, the normiest show for normal people who want precisely ONE hour of television before sleep.
