The whole dollars for blood thing in the US is a uniquely weird fucking thing

This country continues to find new lows day by day year by year

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 29 points 5 months ago

I legitimately did it to survive

Shits fucked up

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 19 points 5 months ago

well they want to legalize organ trade in argentina.

not quite so unique now, ha!

[-] supafuzz@hexbear.net 37 points 5 months ago

trading blood for a place to live, it's vampirism with an extra step

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 22 points 5 months ago

Marx did write about spooky stuff like specters so this tracks.

To quote Alice Caldwell-Kelly, hauntology is when you are a spooky ghost

'donate'

...you keep using that word: i do not think it means what you think it means...

[-] ObsidianZed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 5 months ago

From what I recall when I "donated plasma", it's a dumb loophole that works around some legality regarding "selling plasma".

The dumb loophole is you "donate plasma" for free but they award you with money.

Ahh, the Japanese prostitution system.

https://www.mintpressnews.com/harvesting-blood-americas-poor-late-stage-capitalism/263175/

This was 2019, so I imagine it's much worse. But 2% of us exports was blood.

[-] mango@hexbear.net 30 points 5 months ago

Can't even do this in my area. They give you a gift card lol.

[-] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 25 points 5 months ago

Why is she smiling? Why is this graphic presented to me like it's a completely normal thing?

[-] ProfessorAdonisCnut@hexbear.net 13 points 5 months ago

Delirium from blood loss maybe

[-] wombat@hexbear.net 22 points 5 months ago

the maoist uprising against the landlords was the largest and most comprehensive proletarian revolution in history, and led to almost totally-equal redistribution of land among the peasantry

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 20 points 5 months ago

The lib I work with who's a landlord would look at this and wonder how such a problem could be solved. He would be genuinely concerned but also he's not going to support a system that ends renting property.

[-] invo_rt@hexbear.net 13 points 5 months ago

I could think of a way mao-shining

[-] Dolores@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

the lib, extremely compromised position is rent control, keeping on the leeches out of a respect for property instead of getting rid of them. and landlords are murderous about rent controls

[-] Rx_Hawk@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

I used to do this every chance I got in college, the feeling was terrible and it made you so cold as they pumped your blood back in after it had been filtered. Inhumane that people have to do this to survive.

[-] PsychedSy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 months ago

Wait, it comes back cold? That sounds awesome. I need one of these in a backpack. Can I use a cpu water cooler and an IV?

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

*To pay...

Now I wonder if AI was used.

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 18 points 5 months ago

What it's only rent how much could it cost? how-much-could-it-cost

[-] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 6 points 5 months ago

ALL. OF. YOUR. BLOOD.

[-] Anne_Teefa@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

Fellas are people who need plasma products vampires? Is that all the vampires need? Are vampires that drink whole blood more or less bougie?

Ok on a more serious note, I've heard the profit margin made between the plasma donated and the pittance given is insane , is it true, if anyone happens to know, that the plasma center makes around $1800 per 880 ML of plasma?

[-] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Different blood products have different shelf lives, plasma's a relatively long lasting one.

Edit: this is important for the US's blood industry because a lot of that is then sold off to other countries.

[-] Rx_Hawk@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

This is Rimworld shit

[-] Aryuproudomenowdaddy@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

I donated blood a few times a year for a while until they asked me to do a plasma donation, then started calling me every week until I told them to take me off the list.

[-] Anne_Teefa@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

Yeah. Me too it's good in a pinch but it's still super dystopian to have to do it to just barely survive still

[-] jayWL@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago

I know they chose this pic to have a "relatable, cool" girl to get all gen z'ers to vibe with it, but I can't help but think how that sick sleeve probably cost like $2000.

Like I'm not putting it down, it is a cool fucking sleeve, but I don't know if it fits with the "I need to sell bodily fluids to pay my rent" message

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 1 points 5 months ago

I wondered if it was AI. You make a great point and the "Pay rent" should be "To pay rent" and the circular text and the unnecessary diagonal theme. Everything feels like a hodgepodge that was copy-and-pasted together.

[-] jayWL@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

oh, I honestly didn't think of that, but the person shows zero signs of being AI generated in my opinion. But the ad is 100% surgically cut out to appeal to 20-somethings who need extra cash
