I definitely saw this movie once or twice as a kid, but I remember less about it than I do Clifford, the 1994 movie also starring Charles Grodin (which despite what you might think, didn't involve a large dog at all).

The only thing I remember about the Beethoven movies is that in one of them,

CW: fucked up shit, cruelty to animals, carnisma roadside hot dog stand is slaughtering dogs to make the sausages. There was a scene of dogs in cages acting like human prisoners, doing tropes like knocking a tin cup against the bars. WTF, who thought that was appropriate for a kids' movie?!

I think the people who call Hallmark's mass-produced boilerplate Christmas movies fascist propaganda are onto something.

[–] utopologist@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I live with an elderly person who watches only these movies and cable news, so believe me when I say that they definitely feel like the kind of media that would be on TV if the Nazis had succeeded in WWII

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes the nazis loved very in-offensive quaint nuclear family landscape settings. Movies that had a “deep message” and “too artsy and abstract” as part of cultural criticism was seen as part of judeo-bolshevism modernism.

I can’t help but wonder, do gamergaters not realize that Adolf Hitler would probably hate most vidya/anime?

Like call me basic but it’s pretty obvious my favorite anime is Dragon Ball. It brings me satisfaction knowing the nazis would hate it.

Feels like Hallmark Christmas movies are a dying breed of neoliberal propaganda from the 90's.

[–] blame@hexbear.net 36 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Counterpoint: People would regularly forget their children when leaving on vacation and their children would have to go to war with local crooks

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

then the children would get their annual christmas handshake from the future president a-little-trolling

The eternal boomer

“I miss being a kid and therefore we need to genocide the undesirables!” Like that’s it, that’s their underlying villain origin story; they became adults and miss being a kid. Literal disney adults, literal disney adults are running circles around us in politics and the culture wars. It’s so humiliating we’re losing to THAT!

And the FUCKING 70s? That decade sucked ass. I wasn’t there but my dad most certainly was.

[–] a_little_red_rat@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This thread reminded me of Beethoven, I know I loved it as a kid. It used to play on the TV around Easter back then, but I remember literally nothing.

So I just rewatched it. It's absolute shit lol. Bottom of the barrel trash movie, no redeeming qualities, just absolute garbage. And I say that as a "dog person" who likes the furry slob that lies next to me on the couch rn

Also no, I deeply doubt this was "the standard" back then either, they live in a picturesque fucking suburb with a huge house, it's obviously the upper end of middle class and not the "standard" life that "they took from you"

[–] videogame@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Love that he included the 70s in this. Famous era for optimistic, apolitical movies with no sexual or racial themes.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Read some Marvel from the 70's people were scared as fuck it was the end of the world because of the oil crisis and turmoil in the middle east and it made it's way to comic books.

This same mf will call you propagandized about communism as if they aren't the easiest propaganda victim of all time

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They yearn for the propaganda

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Their whole post was them full on admitting they don't care about things existing, they just want to not think or hear about them che-laugh

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That’s why I always say that the average reactionary simply just misses being a kid. They want to be somehow both a child sheltered by mommy and daddy, but also the self-appointed god of an eternally stagnant neverland.

Even if I woke up tomorrow as straight, rich and neurotypical, I’d still have selfish reasons to support leftism because reactionaries unironically want the world to be boring af.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 49 points 2 days ago (2 children)

IT'S A MOVIE WITH THE PREMISE "WHAT IF A DOG WAS BIG AND GROSS?"

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?

[–] buh@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago (2 children)

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Uphold Wishbone Thought!

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

the propaganda was so much better back then!

[–] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is recycled 1950s nostalgia based on media for a new generation.

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

I have heard multiple boomers cite Leave it to Beaver as if it's a documentary madeline-deadpan

[–] SpookyGenderCommunist@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago (5 children)

OK, but the 90s was peak time for "Racism is over :)" media???

Anyone remember this

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

How does this simultaneously have so many a-list actors, and the production value of an albinoblacksheep animutation? Is that fucking papyrus for the title cards?!

The late 90s were a wonderful time lol

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago

Yes the 90s is definitely what I associate with the “we archived everything” “we fixed racism” and “I don’t see color/I am a friend to all humans” or the “why are black people still upset about what happened xxx years ago?”

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I had to watch this in school agony-consuming

What the fuck James Earl Jones was in this

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Then by their own logic, they’re the ones that did the race baiting. 4chan, facebook and the underlying Amerikkkan hivemind decided “hey we want racism back!” (Not that it ever ended.)

We didn’t stop being color blind, they did and we simply had to as well.

Beethoven

Dog can't talk

Nobody shrinks

Nobody grows giant

No Robin Williams

Dog can't even play basketball

Fuck this shit, I refuse to believe anyone is nostalgic for Beethoven

EDIT: I looked up the plot because I couldn't remember what even happens in this piece of shit movie, and the moral of the story is "animal testing bad" which is so funny because you know these hogs would be baying in a fury if you directly said that to them.

[–] Siobhan@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago

The fact it fucking got sequels always amazed me

to paraphrase Beethoven: "the dog has been destroyed, due to woke"

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

After someone made a comment about it I looked it up and damn, this movie made many sequels; there's eight movies total.

[–] WeedReference420@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Same energy as ~~Sargon of Akkad~~ Carl of Swindon saying that Western Civilisation peaked with Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago

I didn't like the song when a black man sang it because black people scare me. Then some white boys from the suburbs did a cover for it and I could feel my roman ancestors smiling down on me from heaven.

"Beethoven, bite this guy's wiener!!!!!" - The prodigal son of the last great American dynasty

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If 90s Animal Movies were thrash bands Beethoven would be Anthrax. That's some below Homeward Bound respect. To even pretend to be in the same realm as Air Bud is just hubris

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where’s that chapo bit?

They literally reminisced about some proleslop film and thought “yep, 75% of the world’s population needs to die because I like this movie!”

Their brain is a dog’s brain.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

Dogs are nicer at least.

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

oh look, francis found his way to 4chan

I liked it when the Jack Russell Terrier bit that guy in the balls. America doesn't make gratuitous nut violence anymore
