In the US and I get this if I'm zoomed out a bit (and it looks like this is how disputed islands are labeled also, if you check Malvinas/Falklands for example) but if I zoom in a bit it's just "Gulf of America"
If someone says this to me in real life I will literally slap them
only permissible if they are blaming the gulf of america on the disaster a hurricane that grew in it caused

New oil drilling platforms extract record amounts of fossil fuels? They're located in the beautiful Gulf of America, baby

People were debating exactly what the geographic boundaries/regions are for the which version you would see to decrease the odds of overall public backlash worldwide
Some people were trying to protest the change and citing laws and saying Google shouldn't kowtow to Trump

Depending on where the app detects you are, google maps shows different borders and names. So to some countries, it'll show "Gulf of America", "Gulf of Mexico", or even "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)". This is just based on what they perceive to be the most popular politics are in that particular country/government
A famous example is that the borders of India are slightly smaller or bigger depending if you're in Pakistan, India, or China due to all the border disputes those 3 countries have the region

I decided to read the Wikipedia talk page for the Gulf of Mexico and it seems they're not going to change it at least for now, but it is still very funny to read the pro-change arguments being presented.
Reminder that Google enthusiastically reached out to the IDF immediately after October 7th in hopes of selling them all sorts of AI tools; tools presumably used to kill thousands of Gazans.
