I'm reminded of a Chapo segment where they said that if you have strong political beliefs you publicly express, you should be prepared and willing to take shit for those beliefs. Conservatives would not last a day if they had to put up with the constant, near-universal vitriol that communists living in the West get.

7 of 9 doesn't hate them, Jeri Ryan hates them.

"media literacy" is an ocean off the coast of Medialitera

[–] WeedReference420@hexbear.net 33 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

To be fair 7 of 9 would probably also hate them were she real lmao

[–] axont@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Early 7 of 9 wouldn't even think Trump is fit for assimilation. The later, more emotionally nuanced 7 of 9 would probably have roughly the same opinion of Trump as anyone else in the 2400s, that he was a murderous warlord relic of the past before humanity achieved space utopia

he was a little incoherent because he also liked cops and was a misogynist, but I guess no one's perfect. Still made a cool show

If I didn't want people to hate me I would simply not subscribe to a loathsome political ideology

Why can't people just fucking nerd out about stupid fun sci-fi shit.

Because you're not a real nerd. You're a normie who doesn't belong, go back to watching football or golf or something.

Always gatekeep your hobbies. Take it from an anime fan, they invade our communities and act like the standing authorities on it.

[–] axont@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago (1 children)

what would a chud even like about Star Trek? It's explicitly a show about a utopian socialist society that's defeated war, hunger, racism, and sexism.

Like I can still enjoy some reactionary media, like Attack on Titan is written by a chud, but I can still recognize that it's reactionary. The original Ghost in the Shell manga is the same way. I'm with you on anime, I've been into it for decades and it's full of conservative dorks who fail at basic media literacy who get surprised when there are actually political themes that translate to real world positions

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago (2 children)

what would a chud even like about Star Trek?

Probably some brain-dead "humanity fuck yea" bullshit. I'll bet they don't even think about the whole FALGSC aspect, just the cool humans running around space getting one over on the aliens. Basically what 0 media literacy does to a motherfucker

[–] axont@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

i mean to be fair Star Trek is a product of an imperial, western nation so there are some lingering attitudes like you mentioned that pop up occasionally. It depends on the writer though. Often the humans do have a very colonial, imperialist attitude towards other species. Sometimes Starfleet is purely a research/diplomacy organization, sometimes it operates more like a military. It's a show that's been around for a while so it's inconsistent, but the core of the show has been there from even before Day 1. It's showing a future where humans are better than they are now, not because of the space tech stuff, but because we've fixed our society and how people are treated.

Yeah look at Warhammer 40k lmao, thousands of dumbass chuds who don't play the game (and barely engage with the surrounding entertainment) always chime in to speak their piece on fiction they only know thru memes. I stopped playing years ago, but I have a few friends who share their grievances with me. It sounds aggravating

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 48 points 3 months ago (5 children)

"They wanted to turn their brains off, and go nerd out [...] and have some fun."

"why can't people just fucking nerd out about stupid fun sci-fi shit?"

"and have a stupid nerdy time."

Beyond anything political, I think they'd be an incredibly annoying person to be around. What does nerd out even mean?????????????????? Are they attempting to turn to jello as if they're taking recreational sedatives? What positive experiences do they have in their lives that makes them feel like they turn their brain off and, in response, receive a good time from others? Do I socialize wrong?

[–] buh@hexbear.net 41 points 3 months ago

What does nerd out even mean??????????????????

they want to go to an event where they can soyface while watching fictional characters delivering epic Marvel-style one liners

[–] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 34 points 3 months ago (7 children)

at some point they had an intellect, and they developed specialized interests in stuff as many folks do, but our schools train us wrong on purpose, as a joke, unless you go all the way to graduate level education, about how to use that brain so they're mad their conceptual stim toy is made by people who hate their broken brained politics and rather than give an inch to the implication of "The people who made this thing I love hate me", and do some soul searching, they're doubling down and calling it a theft to cope with the loss rather than change to keep what they love.

means they want to CONSOOOOOOOOM

[–] axont@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

they want media to conform, cater, and reinforce their already existing beliefs or to not challenge them in the slightest. Or they want to remember how they felt as children, where the more adult political themes sailed right over their heads. They want to be kids playing with toys.

[–] AndJusticeForAll@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago

It means doing these when you see hot lady appear from the show you watch. matt

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 45 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah Janeway would vote for Kamala.

Not directly related, but I hate how chuds go "why can't we just be friends in THIS space? It's just politics!" because its 1: A bold-faced lie. They freak out about me doing gay shit or not expressing my gender, so they can't figure out how to be friends and 2: No we can't be friends in THIS space, because they want me to not exist in ANY space. Politics isn't just politics, it's life and it's also how you view the world. I'm not gonna be friends or friendly with some dickhead who wants me to disappear.

A local scene had to deal with those types some years ago. It was a place called "the youth house" which was supposed to be a house for youth. Of course some whiny libertarian freaks showed up, got shoved out and then cried about it, which was of course picked up by national media. "Well if THEY can't be there, then it's not a place for all youth!" fuck off. They got manhandled out because they couldn't behave, they acted as if they were in a zoo and got flabbergasted when the "animals" didn't go along with their shitty behaviour.

If they're there others can't be there, that's how it is, that's how things work. I've been to libertarian bars and it was a shitty experience because people like me weren't welcome. They said everyone was welcome, but that's never true because it's not possible to make everyone feel welcome and you gotta make a decision on who you want to cater to. In the case of the "youth house" it was trans youth, in the case of the libertarian bar it was some conservative asshole who called me a removed (I feel the need to stress this, I was on my best behaviour and I had done nothing to antagonise anyone. I was kind and polite until some guy went up to me and said "what's up removed?" And I STILL calmly asked him not to call me that, to which he decided to continue because "it's a free country". Somehow it wasn't so free when I decided to reciprocate his language.). No media attention for me though, no big show about how poor old widdle enbie me wasn't allowed at the "everyone is welcome" bar, weird that.

These sacks of shit get the world served to them on a silver platter and still cry foul when you ask them to stop stealing falafel off your plate.

Also lastly, they don't mind politics in art. All art is political, they just don't want it to be challenging to them. "Die hard isn't political!" No it just agrees with you/doesn't challenge your worldview.
It's the same with libs that say they're against "political violence" while arguing for the police.

Ps. Chuds are whiny babies, if they experienced even 1/10th of the pushback that communists get, then they'd end themselves.

[–] KimJongGoku@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago (1 children)

But where are those poor libertarians supposed to go if not the Youth House? They sure as hell won't go for the Of Legal Age House

Wow a show about FALGSC is hostile to fascism?!?!?! wowee

[–] Dr_Gabriel_Aby@hexbear.net 29 points 3 months ago (2 children)

There is a dad that wears Trump gear at the legit “baby/toddler only” playground i go to everyday, and I always imagine him complaining like this.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

He wears the gear every day? Like sometimes I'm in my satanic shirts at the toddler park but that's just because I don't think about what i wear

[–] Dr_Gabriel_Aby@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Not just everyday, but every piece of gear is different. maybe a half dozen hats and a new trump shirt every time.

particularly modern trek

Every time tito-laugh

[–] Black_Mald_Futures@hexbear.net 32 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (10 children)

modern star trek sucks absolute ass though but not for the reasons this guy hates it

[–] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 37 points 3 months ago (2 children)

old trek was actually more political, in that it showed different ideologies crashing into each other, "geopolitical" maneuvering between empires, explored ideas like colonialism, etc.

new trek is literally just shiny laser go brrr

[–] Black_Mald_Futures@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yea i'm just saying new trek sucks

[–] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 29 points 3 months ago (1 children)

and I'm saying this chud and his friends are exactly the intended audience of nu-trek. It's dumbed down and turned into laser shows for consooooomers who want to "turn off their brains and nerd out" and "hate politics". It's funny they complain about nu-trek when it's literally them who caused this

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

But the main character of Discovery has very political skin and gender. And the homosexuals!

Only the live-action modern Trek. Lower Decks easily competes with DS9 and TNG for quality. Different tone certainly. But it's its own distinct thing. TNG was renowned for its ethics and morality plays. DS9 was about the challenges of being on the frontier. I think LD's distinctive feature will end up being a faith that we can be better than we are, despite what we've done and what we've seen.

[–] Black_Mald_Futures@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

Bit idea: make an account for /r/conservative and post nothing but complaints about how literally every celebrity hates "us" until every poster there feels like this guy's friends

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Conservatives: We get to hate gays, and transes, and multi racial households, and immigrants, and people smarter than us, and people dumber than us, and the poor and the rich. Its my right as a conservative!

Everybody else: We fuckin hate you too.

Conservatives: i-spil-my-jice

guess these are the “Sisko poison-gassing a Maquis planet and making it uninhabitable for 50 years was such a great way to deal with a resistance movement” enjoyers

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The Maquis were a bunch of space glampers super mad that the Federation will no longer support their colonization efforts in contested territory so they started doing adventurism instead of moving to one of dozens of established worlds where all of their needs are guaranteed to be met by law

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago (1 children)

But you don't understand, they industrial replicated those homes with their own two construction bots.

They wanted to turn their brains off

Nobody I know who likes real sci-fi likes it because it allows them to turn their brains off, they like it because it's intellectually stimulating.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago

If these 'people' were actual humans you'd think they could extrapolate how the different (and neverending) groups of people they hate and want to victimize feel, but empathy only presents in humans.
